Ambientato a Nanchino nel 1937 ai tempi dell'invasione giapponese, il film racconta la storia di un gruppo di studentesse che si nasconde nella cantina di una chiesa insieme ad un americano John Miller, e a 13 prostitute di un vicino bordello. Quando i giapponesi attaccano l'edifico solo l'intervento di Miller, che si spaccia per un prete, le salverà dallo stupro.

When he finds himself in the unwanted position of protector of both groups from the horrors of the invading Japanese army, he discovers the meaning of sacrifice and honor.
