En 1974, à l'époque du regroupement familial, Zouina, une belle maghrébine d'une trentaine d'années, arrive de son Algérie natale avec ses trois enfants pour s'installer à Saint-Quentin, en Picardie, sous l'étroite surveillance de sa belle-mère Aïcha. Elle vient rejoindre Ahmed, son mari, dont elle vit séparée depuis dix ans et qu'elle considère presque comme un inconnu. Celui-ci est ouvrier spécialisé dans une usine textile. Zouina partage sa cour avec un couple de retraités. L'arrivée de cette famille est une véritable catastrophe pour M. et Mme Donze et les hostilités ne tardent pas à se déclarer.
In 1974, Zouina leaves her native Algeria, with her three young children and domineering mother-in-law, to join her husband in France, who has lived and worked there for the past ten years. Zouina’s unhappiness at leaving her home and family behind is increased when her sour-faced neighbours take a dislike to her and her husband beats her for disobeying him. When she learns there is an other Algerian family in the area, she sets out to look for them, knowing that her husband and mother-in-law will be furious when they learn she has left the house without permission…
Zouina llega de su Argelia natal, con sus tres hijos. Viene areunirse con su marido, Ahmed, el cual lleva diez años trabajando enFrancia, y al cual ha visto muy poco en todo este tiempo. Aïcha, lamadre de Ahmed, viaja con ella. A pesar de la agresividad de susvecinos, de los constantes reproches de su suegra y de los desconfiadossilencios de su marido, Zouina trata de adaptarse a su nueva vida en elexilio. La radio es su único vínculo con la vida y con las mujeres, eneste país nuevo. Ya no tiene ningún tipo de relación con Argelia. Undía, se entera por casualidad de que otra familia argelina vive en elmismo pueblo, así que decide encontrarla sea como sea.
