Le film raconte l'histoire des rapports parfois tendus entre Michel-Ange et Jules II à l'époque où l'artiste peignit le plafond de la chapelle Sixtine. Sur ce point, il diffère du roman d'Irving Stone qui, lui, raconte toute la vie du grand peintre. Rome, 1508. Michel-Ange est chargé par le pape Jules II de peindre les fresques du plafond de la Chapelle Sixtine. Cédant tour à tour à la passion fébrile et au découragement, le peintre génial supporte mal le comportement despotique du pape. L'affrontement entre les deux grands hommes est inévitable…

Pope Julius is eager to leave behind works by which he will be remembered. To this end he cajoles Michelangelo into painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When not on the battlefield uniting Italy, the Pope nags Michelangelo to speed up his painful work on the frescoes.
