Mathilde Strangerson, the daughter of an eminent scientist, narrowly escapes being murdered in her own bedroom by an unknown assailant. As the room was locked from the inside, no one can understand how the attacker managed to enter or leave the room. Reporter and amateur sleuth Joseph Rouletabille arrives on the scene to protect Mathilde and resolve the mystery of the yellow room.

Mathilde Stangerson devenue Madame Darzac, reste en butte aux poursuites de son premier mari, Larsan, qu'elle croyait mort. Rouletabille denoue l'intrigue et Madame Darzac retrouve un fils.

The story continued three years later, in 1905, when Ballmeyer returned in the story chronicled by Leroux under the title of Le Parfum de la Dame en Noir (The Scent of the Lady in Black). At the end of the story, which took place in a castle by the sea in Southern France, Ballmeyer died, freeing Rouletabille from the evil shadow of the past.
