Karl Bryullov was born on December 12, 1799 in St. Petersburg. In August 1822, he graduated from the Academy and received the golden medal, then he went to Italy with his brother to pursuit his training. That same year, Karl went to Rome, hoping to stay there for only three years, but his training lasted 12 years. His first Italian paintings brought him fame. Between the mid 1830s to 1840s, the painter created a gallery of portraits of his contemporaries. In 1843, Karl Bryullov got seriously ill and went to the island of Madeira. From there he moved to Italy, where he spent his last years. Karl Bryullov died June 12, 1852 in Rome. The beautiful portrait “Portrait of Countess Yuliya Pavlovina Samoylova” was left unfinished. It was brought to her in Milan after the death of Bryullov.
