Wizard of Strings Geir Sundstøl is back with his fourth solo album, St.Hanshaugen Steel. The title is an homage to the long gone steel factory located on his own stomping ground, and also a reference to Sundstøl’s reputable broad spectrum-treatment of the pedal steel guitar.

«I had admired Arve’s lyrical expression for years, and finally I mustered up the confidence to ask him to participate.» Initially, the trumpeter was asked to play on the outro of Våg, but he «got carried away, and added 10 tracks of trumpet and horn. We recorded Våg, thinking half-speed pedal steel, upright bass and 80’s Simmons Drums would be the core of the song. It came out a little more than that.” – Geir Sundstøl

St.Hanshaugen Steel offers a springboard to a dreamlike venture through soundscapes of “unusual” instruments, angelic guest-appereances, fairground attractions and 60’s sci-fi. It takes us deeper into the sonic textures with each incremental play.

Sundstøl’s sound is cinematic, but genreless, experimental and at the same time refreshingly open to any listener. The organic subtlety is now mixed with a new palette of synthetic paint.

Like Sundstøl’s earlier Hubro solo-releases, St.Hanshaugen Steel is mixed by Bård Ingebrigtsen and mastered by Helge Sten.
Once again, Sundstøl is calling upon some of his favourite musical brothers in arms; drummer and percussionist Erland Dahlen, bass players Mats Eilertsen and Jo Berger Myhre, and pianist/keyboardist David Wallumrød. St.Hanshaugen Steel also brings forth the beloved boys’ choir Sølvguttene, and the lyrical Arve Henriksen on the opening track “Våg”.
