We take a close-up look at a couple of key specification categories this month. Firstly, since surfaces can make or break any kitchen or bathroom design, we’ve rounded up some must-see options when it comes to worktops and tiles, and we’ve found some really creative new designs that manage to combine practicality with striking aesthetics.

Also, this month, when it comes to kitchen appliances, one of the functions that can be somewhat lower down on the client’s priority list is extraction, and yet having proper extraction is absolutely vital in ensuring the space is both workable and a pleasant environment to be in. We sounded out some of the leading manufacturers of cooker hoods for a snapshot of the latest top-end extraction products to consider.

And speaking of appliances, our visit to electronics showcase IFA in Berlin a month or so ago was a real eye-opener. Among all the clever new tech being launched at the show, an overriding theme was present everywhere you looked – the continuing development of smart technology. Despite the false starts and ‘tomorrow’s world’ ideas that have been bandied about over the years, the connected home is starting to really take shape, with most of the market-leading brands focusing squarely on taking this even further over the next few years. Expect to hear a lot more about this on our pages in the months to come.

In the meantime, enjoy the issue…
