"Lazy Afternoon" is the 17th studio album recorded by American singer Barbra Streisand. It was released on October 14, 1975 by Columbia Records. Following a mixed critical response to her previous studio album, "ButterFly" (1974), the singer began working with new musicians for the project. Recorded in April 1975 in Los Angeles, "Lazy Afternoon" contains pop standards. Producer Rupert Holmes wrote three songs on the album, and co-wrote a fourth, "By the Way", with Streisand. She also included a few cover songs, such as Four Tops' "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)", Stevie Wonder's "You and I", and Libby Holman's "Moanin' Low". The album received generally favorable reviews from music critics who agreed that it was more exciting than "ButterFly". Commercially, the album peaked at #12 on the United States, #42 in Canada, and #84 in Australia. It was later certified Gold by the RIAA. "My Father's Song" and "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)" were released as singles in August and November 1975, respectively. The former entered the Adult Contemporary charts in the United States and Canada while the latter was a success on two of Billboard's dance charts in late 1975.

Lazy Afternoon was Barbra Streisand's Rupert Holmes album. Holmes, later known for his number one hit "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," arranged, conducted, and co-produced the album and wrote or co-wrote four songs. He helped Streisand to continue her evolution into a kind of post-rock contemporary pop artist. This was achieved largely through the sympathetic ballad arrangements, which surrounded Streisand's voice with delicately played individual instruments while focusing on her calm vocals. The exception was a cover of the Four Tops' "Shake Me, Wake Me," which was given a disco treatment. For the most part, Lazy Afternoon was true to its title, a collection of relaxed performances that was pleasant without being particularly impressive.

Footnotes:

• Track 2 written especially for Barbra by Rupert Holmes.
• Basic recording completed in 3 six-hour sessions in L.A., April 1975, most vocals sung live with orchestra.
• Reflecting on the sessions, Holmes said of Barbra, "She is the easiest person to produce, the easiest just as long as you allow her to do what she feels is her best work. For instance, she will cut a track and you say, 'Great!' Then she will say, 'I think I can get it better.' 'Are you sure? Because you can't get it better.' Then she will say, 'I'll do it once more.' And it does get better. In the end you look like a genius simply for nodding your head…Once she asked me to rearrange a number, which I thought was a good arrangement. It was a drag, but she wanted it to work better, and in the end it did. I was grateful to her for making me demand more of myself, what she demands of herself."
• Quadraphonic LP also released (out of print).
• Unreleased songs: "Better" and "Everything" (different than the same-titled song in A Star Is Born).
• Digitally restored/remastered CD released.
• BB: 11-1-75 / 20 / #12 || G, 4/14/76
