RCA/Arista/Legacy's 2005 release The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates is a repackaging of BMG Heritage's excellent 2004 compilation Ultimate Daryl Hall + John Oates. Spanning two discs and 37 tracks, the set contains all 18 songs from 2001's The Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates, which was a single-disc, 18-track collection that contained all of the duo's big hits from the '70s and '80s (three tracks were in alternate single mixes on that collection; they're presented in their original album mixes here), along with "She's Gone" (absent on The Very Best) and two other Atlantic tracks from the early '70s, selections from their Arista recordings of the late '80s and early '90s, as well as cuts from 1997's Marigold Sky and 2003's excellent comeback single, "Do It for Love."

The two classic albums reissued on this CD are from 1975 and 1976. While they didn't exactly set the world on fire, they DID leave the listener with no doubt as to just how talented the musicians that made up MFSB were and that they could tackle everything from Disco to Funk to Soul to MOR-Pop with grace, class and musical virtuosity. It's definitely great to have these classics on CDs as these albums capture the magic of the Philadelphia Soul sound at a time when it had truly reached its apex. Enjoy!

"Come On Over" is the 8th studio album by Olivia Newton-John, released on 29 February 1976. It peaked at #2 on the US Country albums chart, and #13 on the Billboard 200. The album's first track, a cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene", was only released as a single in Japan, and it became a hit there, peaking at #11 on the Oricon Singles Chart. The album itself was also a success in the Japanese market, reaching the #2 position on the Oricon Albums Chart. In the US, the only single released from the album was the title song, written by Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb and originally featured on the Bee Gees' 1975 album "Main Course". It was a moderate pop hit, peaking at #23 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but did much better on the Country (#5) and Adult Contemporary (7th of 10 #1 singles) charts. In New Zealand, the title track reached #3. The album was certified Gold.

Good album. AOR with elements of Rockabily, a little bit of New Wave and a lot of influence of ZZ TOP, a Lot!. In fact, if you are very very into the classic sound of AOR in a FM, STRANGEWAYS, BAD ENGLISH Style, i think this album may sound a little bit boring, but anyway it has its good songs like "This Can´t Be Love" and "She´s Got It All". The rest of the album in my opinion doesn´t have much to offer, but like a said previously if you are a big fan of ZZ TOP´s "Eliminator", you´ll enjoy this.

"Ladies' Night" is the 11th studio album by the funk band Kool & the Gang, released in 1979. The album became their first major success especially after the release of the title track, the U.S. #8 "Ladies' Night," and the U.S. #5 follow-up "Too Hot" which both became Billboard Top 10 hits. The album brought a return to the mainstream after a lull in success from 1976-1978. In addition all the cuts from the album reached number five on the disco chart. "Ladies' Night" was the album where Kool & the Gang perfected their funky style and made it more mainstream by incorporating some pop and light R&B into the sound. The result was that this album was not only popular during the 1970s black-oriented funk era where the band started, but also during the more popular and diverse disco era. Ladies' Night became their first Platinum album. It also marked the debut of lead vocalist James "J.T." Taylor.

"A Single Man", released in 1978, is the 12th studio album release for Elton John. It is the first album where Gary Osborne replaced Bernie Taupin as lyricist. It is also the only Elton John album to not have any tracks co-written by Bernie Taupin on the original cut. The album was released on 16 October 1978 by MCA in America, and by Rocket in the UK. Singles from the album were "Part-Time Love", October 1978; "Song for Guy", November 1978; and "Return to Paradise", 1979. "Song for Guy" was a near-global success, charting high everywhere except the US and Canada, where John's label, MCA Records, did not feel that it had hit potential. "A Single Man" was John's first album ever to be officially released in the former USSR. In the US, A Single Man was certified Gold in October 1978 and Platinum in November of the same year by the RIAA. Like with many of John's releases of the late-70s and the 1980s, it received generally mixed reviews from critics.

"Mysterious Traveller" is the 4th studio album of Weather Report and was released in 1974. This album marked the end of bassist Miroslav Vitouš's tenure with the band. Vitouš was replaced by Alphonso Johnson. Another addition to the line-up is drummer Ishmael Wilburn. Greg Errico was the drummer for the tour between the previously released Sweetnighter and this album, but declined an invitation to be a permanent member of the band. The record is the band's first that predominantly uses electric bass and incorporates liberal uses of funk, R&B grooves, and rock that would later be hallmarked as the band's "signature" sound. Also, the more restricted compositional format became evident on this album, replacing the more "open improvisation" formats used on the first three albums.

"The Art of Love" is the 8th studio album by German singer Sandra released in 2007 by Virgin Records. "The Art of Love" is Sandra's first album not to be produced by her then-partner, Michael Cretu, who at that time was unavailable due to working on the new Enigma album, A Posteriori. It was also her last album released before their separation in late 2007. Instead, the material was produced by Jens Gad, Cretu's "right hand man". This change made Sandra actively participate in writing songs for the first time in her career. She contributed very personal lyrics, revisiting sad experiences from her childhood. The album also includes three cover versions: "Put Your Arms Around Me" originally recorded by Sinéad O'Connor, "All You Zombies" by The Hooters, and "Casino Royale", previously recorded by Edyta Górniak as "Sleep with Me" and Conjure One as "Sleep". "Love Is the Price" features DJ BoBo and is their second collaboration, after the 2006 hit "Secrets of Love".

"Swept Away" is the 14th studio album by the American entertainer Diana Ross, released on September 13, 1984 by RCA Records in North America and by Capitol Records in Europe. This album yielded several US hit singles, the most successful of which was "Missing You" (#10 Pop, #1 R&B, #4 AC). "Missing You", which became Ross' final top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 was also produced by former labelmate and collaborator Lionel Richie and was a tribute to late soul singer Marvin Gaye, Ross and Richie's former Motown Records label-mate. Other singles included the Daryl Hall and Arthur Baker-produced "Swept Away" (#19 Pop, #3 R&B, #1 Dance) and the Julio Iglesias duet, "All of You" (#19 Pop, #38 R&B, #2 AC, #1 Spain). All three of these singles were accompanied by popular music videos.

Like Stuart Hamm, Jeff Berlin finds himself to be neither a fusion player or a rock player, but rather somewhere uncomfortably in between. His chops are unmatched; however, like Al Di Meola, this has always presented the issue of musical integrity. His importance to aspiring bass players cannot be overstated; however, to the casual listener this session will sound too uneven. The opening track, "Pump It!," featuring Buddy Miles on lead vocals, sounds stiff and contrived. He does redeem himself though on "Joe Frasier (Round 2)," an expansion of a song he wrote while with Bill Bruford. His tribute to Rush "All The Greats" and to J.S. Bach "Bach" contain impressive playing, but are far too repetitive to sustain any interest beyond his solos.

"Macho" is an album by Hungarian guitarist Gábor Szabó featuring performances recorded in 1975 and released on the Salvation label. The Allmusic review states "This is a tough, streetwise, commercial jazz album that has plenty to offer to anyone with an open mind. In the pocket, groove-soaked, and flawlessly executed".

There have been scads of Patti LaBelle compilations throughout the years. If you take a glance at the lower left-hand corner of Anthology's cover, you can get some idea of where it stands in relation to all the others. The Philadelphia International logo, located in that spot, indicates that the set will be reliant upon LaBelle's few years spent at that label, which weren't - astonishingly enough - all that successful from a commercial standpoint.
