The instrumental works of Marc-Antoine Charpentier are familiar to very few people. A large number of them were composed for use in churches, the most famous of these being the Messe pour plusieurs instruments au lieu des orgues that has already been recorded by Jean Tubéry and La Fenice for Ricercar (RIC 245). Charpentier composed the Sonate à huit around 1685, at a time when various private musical societies were exploring the Italian sonata style. Charpentier discovered this style at the same time as François Couperin, who also set about composing sonatas in the Italian style. Couperin’s sonatas were, recorded splendidly last year by Les Dominos for Ricercar (RIC 330); the recording was praised highly by the musical press, being awarded 5 Diapasons and an FFFF by Telerama. Charpentier’s Sonate à huit blends the Italian style with the French suite of dances and as such is one of the masterpieces of instrumental music of the French baroque. The symphonies Pour un Reposoir were intended to accompany an outdoor procession, an organ naturally not being available. The greater part of the CD, however, is taken up by the Noëls pour les Instruments which Charpentier set for instrumental ensemble and organ. Our interpretation of this work is based on the original manuscript and respects the marked instrumentation as well as Charpentier’s own specifications for organ registrations. We have also recorded the original versions of the above-mentioned Christmas carols, complete with their many verses as they appeared in French collections published at the beginning of the 18th century.

This recording of Christmas music can be enjoyed throughout the year!

This is an interesting, if somewhat unfocused, collection of music by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. It’s made up of a multi-movement piece intended to accompany the sacrament of the Eucharist—one of several such compositions he wrote over the years—two collections of noels, which include those transcribed (in a few instances, more than once) by Charpentier, mixed with a few traditional arrangements, and a Sonate à huit that, like Couperin’s sonades , reflects an early and positive French response to the Corellian sonata.

Pour un reposoir , in seven movements, is a typically curious French Baroque religious hybrid. It starts with a two-part Overture that, aside from its short length, would have done credit to a Lully opera. (The likeness is emphasized by the entire work being in Lully’s favored five parts.) There follows an orchestral Tantum ergo , the Gregorian model (with its first verse sung by three baritones, accompanied—as was the Baroque custom—by serpent), a fugal orchestral movement on the Tantum ergo theme, a sung Genitori, geintoque , a fugal orchestral Amen , and a final, far lengthier allemande grave , whose pronounced pomp and swagger presumably meant it was to accompany the filing out of nobility in attendance.

The noels on this album are a by-no-means consecutive mix of two collections of Charpentier’s arrangements, 10 in number, and four others as sung a capella in traditional fashion. A few remain well known even today— Une jeune pucelle, Joseph est bien marié, Les Bourgeois de Châtre —and can even be heard on occasion in the U.S. during brief pauses between the hundreds of Rudolfs and Frosties we are annually graced with. Points to Florence Malgoire and Les Dominos for a selection that deliberately contrasts different treatments. I disagree on one point here: the use of a full-sized organ (that of the church of Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebasiliek from the ancient Belgian town of Tongeren) in the noels. The liner notes state that since the organ’s cornet register is indicated in manuscript to double the violins in Or nous dites Marie , a full-sized church organ is clearly meant for all these pieces, “and not a small positive organ such as we nowadays hear all too often in performances.” But this overlooks the fact that similar comments do not occur in the other noels. In context, Charpentier’s comment probably was intended as a note if the work was performed on a full-sized instrument—since it was not just common but expected during the period for music to be performed in many different arrangements, for a variety of voices and orchestration. The organ as heard here sounds too thick while doubling the bass lines of Les Bourgeois de Chârte and Ô créateur.

Finally, the Sonate is a stylistic reconciliation: Italian violins, a bass violin with five strings(!), a French viol, and bass viol are all requested, as well as a pair of transverse flutes, with theorbo and harpsichord for figured bass. The four movements give the effect, as Couperin’s chamber music not infrequently does, of being an opera-in-miniature. Two of the movements even start with very French-sounding recitatives, followed by a mix of dances that for the most part seem French, as well, save for an extremely Italianate gigue. The whole thing is brilliantly written to showcase the qualities of the different instruments in various solos and duets. The work deserves to be far better known than it currently is.

My only concerns about performance have already been stated. For the rest, Les Dominos, whom I so enjoyed in a release of Couperin’s sonades (Ricercar 330), once again prove themselves to be a spirited, technically and stylistically expert ensemble. Added orchestral forces from Les Agrémens in the noels and Pour un reposoir mesh completely, while the Namur singers are a disciplined, beautifully enunciating lot. Whether listeners are as bothered as I periodically was by the large organ sound, this recording is especially to be recommended for the hard-to-locate Sonata.
