Music costs money and takes time, and the worlds of film, television, radio, and advertising need lots of music and they need it quickly. So, in the mid-20th century, "library music" emerged, allowing producers to license pre-recorded tracks, saving both hours and expenses. In Britain, the system flourished thanks to major publishers like De Wolfe, Chappell, KPM, and Bruton, each of which shaped the industry with a distinct approach. De Wolfe, often cited as the world's first library label (established in 1909), built a formidable reputation with orchestral recordings and, later, cutting-edge electronic scores. Chappell, launched in the 1940s, became synonymous with big-band energy and lush orchestral themes, releasing classic LPs in the 1960s and '70s by figures such as Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw. KPM, with its iconic green-sleeve LPs, offered a blend of polished jazz, funk, and pop cues that proved particularly adaptable for television themes and sports programming. Bruton, arriving in 1977, pushed the sound in a slicker, more contemporary direction, leaning heavily into disco, electronic textures, and commercial polish.

By contrast, Studio G, founded in 1965 by Harry Rabinowitz and John Gale, was smaller and more idiosyncratic. Unlike the large corporate libraries, it emphasized artistry and experimentation, producing cues that were often quirkier, more intimate, and less standardized. Where the big four built vast catalogs for mass licensing, Studio G carved a niche as the boutique, creative outlier of British library music. Its records often featured adventurous or unusual material—think quirky chamber ensembles, moody electronic textures, avant-garde jazz, or hazy, folk-influenced cues—that didn't always fit the slick, mass-market profile of the bigger libraries, but were appealing to independent producers, educational filmmakers, and international clients who wanted something a little distinctive, a little psychedelic, and perhaps also a little less expensive. This approach has also been appealing to modern cratediggers like Aphex Twin and Tyler, the Creator, both of whom have used (or been inspired by) the utterly unique sounds put down by the team at Studio G.

This excellent new compilation isn't the first time the studio's work has been compiled (2009's G-Spots: The Spacey Folk Electro-Horror Sounds of the Studio G Library focused more on the weirdest bits, but is long out of print), but it is the first time there's been an attempt to use Studio G's work to craft a cohesive sonic experience. Neatly dividing the album into two clear vibes—"Psychotropic Hopping Morning" and "Space Temple Midnight"—Dream a Dream definitely emphasizes the trippier sounds that came from the studio, and producer Ryan Jebavy does a remarkable job at weaving together disparate cues into two distinct and adventurous pieces. The warm, mellow cues of "Pastoral Reflections," "One Summer's Night," and "Slow Motion" come together in a way that makes both sonic and narrative sense in the "Psychotropic Hopping Morning" section, while it's during "Space Temple Midnight" that things get expectedly bonkers, whether it's the ominously New Age-y "Wastelands" segueing into the spooky analog synth groove of "Computer Games Intro / Night Trawler" and the proto-glitch "Asian Workload." The musicianship and fidelity of the original material shines through on all of these individual pieces, but more than that, they also show that, sometimes, the constraints of commercialism can lead to truly interesting creative results. © Jason Ferguson
