Jimi Hendrix and Traffic became friends from their first meeting when they played together around the London club scene from 1967 onwards. Sharing a love of technical and musical innovation, and progressive thought, it would not be long until Messrs. Hendrix, Winwood, Capaldi, Wood and Mason collaborated, and in so doing produce a series of instrumental jam sessions. While to date these have been made available on underground releases, and thus only heard by very few, they remain excellent quality recordings, both musically fascinating and eminently listenable.

Attempts to dismiss Sun Ra as an “outsider” artist, an eccentric who made strange claims, are always own goals. Of course he was an outsider. That was precisely his point. And not just an outsider. He came from so far away we could not imagine it. But he also came from right inside American culture and was deeply shaped by it. There is perhaps no more representative an American artist of the modern period. If the Saturn V rocket was the symbol one kind of hegemony, governed by the dollar and the slide rule, the Arkestra was its joyous, subversive retort. Next stop for NASA seems to be Mars, but he got there first. (Brian Morton)

Of all the labels that have attached to the work of Sun Ra over the years – Afrofuturism, experimental music, avant-garde, neo-swing – the one that makes most sense is “space music”. It’s also the one that most often misleads. It isn’t all about flying saucers and alien civilisations, but it is about space, which is the dimension in which music functions. Has any composer/arranger ever used it more effectively? Listen again to Heliocentric Worlds … but without dwelling on the scientistic or sci-fi title, and you’ll hear – and see – what I mean … (Brian Morton)

Inspired by a trip to Tijuana, Tijuana Moods was recorded in 1957 but was sat on by RCA until its release in 1962. Bassist/composer Charles Mingus at the time said that this was his greatest recording, and it certainly ranks near the top. The original version, which was usually edited together from a few different takes, consisted of just five performances. It has often been said that Mingus forced and pressured his sidemen to play above their potential, and that is certainly true of this project. Altoist Shafi Hadi (who doubles on tenor) is in blazing form on "Ysabel's Table Dance," while trumpeter Clarence Shaw (who was praised by Mingus for his short lyrical solo on "Flamingo") sounds quite haunting on "Los Mariachis." Trombonist Jimmy Knepper and drummer Dannie Richmond made other great recordings, but they are in particularly superior form throughout this session, as is the obscure pianist Bill Triglia. Completing the band is Ysabel Morel on vocals and Frankie Dunlop on castanets.
