Symphony No.2 (Op.16, 1886) was composed by A. Glazunov under the influence of symphonic works by A. Borodin. E. Svetlanov characterizes the symphony in the following way: „…heroic scope, undoubtedly coming from Borodin, will be later revealed in a remarkable poem "Stenka Razin". One is tempted to call Symphony No. 2 "Volzhskaya'".
Powerful unison of the brass introduces the slow and majestic beginning of the first movement, Andante maestoso. And though at first one is reminded of the "Heroic Symphony" by A. Borodin, later in the main part, based on the same intonations of the introduction, there is a melodic originality of Glazunov most* distinctly revealed. Here for the first time in his symphonic experience the composer addresses the Eastern theme which was typical for the Balakirev school. The basis of the second movement — Andante — was laid by the same theme of the first part, only rhythmically changed. According to its artistic value, Andante is a significant step to the remarkable slow movements of the mature symphonies of the composer. The third movement — Scherzo — also marks characteristical traits of the similar images in the future symphonies. The cycle is crowned by the epic Finale, written as the first part in "Borodin" style.
"Song of Fate" is also recorded on this CD. The work was composed by A. Glazunov at the period of his creative maturity.
