From the Notes: The string quartets founded or led by Rudolf Kolisch stand out from other quartets by a special quality: They belong to the history of the Second Viennese School. This is no accidental quality, caused by mere biographical coincidence; it is an audible one, a musical quality - and not only when listening to contemporary music. …In 1918 Schoenberg and the musicians associated with him founded the "Verein für musikalische Privatauführungen" ["Society for Private Musical Performances"]. ,,, This Society is known for its influence on the foundation of the Kolisch Quartet and its importance on the performing rules of this ensemble… But even more important for Kolisch and other young musicians were the weekly gatherings in Schoenberg's flat in Mödling. Each Sunday the disciples and friends met there in order to play classical and romantic chamber music for their own pleasure…"
