Celebrate 50 years of Patti Smith’s debut studio album with the release of Horses (50th Anniversary). The 2-set features the iconic album remastered direct from the original master tapes and previously unreleased outtakes and rarities - including Patti Smith’s 1975 RCA audition tape.

"I was very, very suspicious, very guarded and hard to work with, because I was so conscious of how I perceived rock 'n' roll. It was becoming over-produced, over-merchandised and too glamorous. I was trying to fight against all of that. We had a big, hard battle," Patti Smith told The Independent in 1996 of making her 1975 debut, Horses. So it's fascinating to hear even more ragged versions of the bloody raw songs that made her famous, on a 50th anniversary version of the album. Stripped of its wild blues-rock guitar line and rolling at a leisurely, Doors-like pace, a demo of iconic "Gloria: In Excelsis Deo" feels more reckless—the power of the rhythm front and center—than the swaggering danger of the well-known version. The sonic pelvic thrust of "I'm gonna uh-uh make her mine" is missing, as is the frenzied, heavy drama of the bridge. Richard Sohl's saloon piano suddenly feels madcap. The rhythm also comes to the forefront of a rough version of "Distant Fingers," a dramatic, Blondie-esque track (Smith's bassist, Ivan Král, was in an early version of that band as well) from 1976's Radio Ethiopia—recorded as Patti Smith Group—and also previously released as a demo. Here, Lenny Kaye's heavy guitar reverb is buried to the point that it's almost like a distant satellite signal, while the bottom end feels extra ominous.

Other changes spark intriguing questions, like why Smith altered the lyrics of "Kimberly," about the birth of her little sister. Grooving on Král's great bubblegum-esque bass line, Smith unfurls a significantly different story for the spoken-word bridge. Rather than focusing heavily on the burning of an abandoned barn near their home, and her determination to save Kimberly from all it symbolized, she reveals what the baby represented to her: "So I pressed you against me and I wasn't alone." You also hear just how loose and improvisational Smith was while recording with producer John Cale. She drops words and flips around the order of lines on both "Gloria" and "Redondo Beach," presented here in demo form—its reggae vibe sounding more like a boardwalk carnival. A cringey "You know what I mean, mon" was wisely cut from the final song, while the second half of "Called you on the phone/ Johnny no answer" was tweaked to "another dimension." For an alternate take of smoky "We Three," featured on 1977's Easter and supposedly about a love triangle with Smith, boyfriend Allen Lanier (of Blue Oyster Cult) and Television guitarist/Smith collaborator Tom Verlaine, "you began to cry so recklessly" becomes "you began to cry so desperately"—totally different imagery. A variation on "Break It Up" just feels unfinished without the gang vocals yelling the title, but what a treat it is to hear Smith really, truly singing—belting—on a cover of the Motown classic "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game." © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
