It has been a long time since improvised music distanced itself from the adolescent posture of its first revolutionary years which, under the pretext of breaking with the prerequisite and transcendence of a text to be “interpreted” in the instant of a performance that is by nature always second and deferred, allowed it to claim, in the instantaneity in which it was based, a direct relationship to the creative impulse, freed in some way from any reference to the past, which is necessarily alienating. Without renouncing the authentically subversive dimension of a gesture that is both political and poetic, radically deconstructing dominant cultural forms and norms, what all great improvisers have, on the contrary, constantly experimented with and highlighted in their practice is the extent to which their gestures, however spontaneous in their expression, were haunted, nourished, and populated by a multitude of stories and memories, pertaining as much to the intimate as to the collective unconscious, which were not to be denied or repressed as so many vestiges of an "old order" to be erased, but rather to be welcomed, recognized, even liberated—bringing (re)emerged in the flow of discourse all this intertwining of affects and artifacts that ground us, only to set them in motion again within the field and perspective of a revisited relationship with oneself and with the other.

It is this fertile paradox between emergence and reminiscence that Régis Huby, Bruno Chevillon and Michele Rabbia, united within the trio Codex, have decided to place at the heart of their new project, seeking at every moment to capture in the spontaneity of the improvised gesture the presence/absence of a story in progress. As if to embody in real time this continual doubling of the discourse and to make heard, by underlining the fortuitous appearances, the structural traces of a previous/inner voice resonating in every sound projection and by unconsciously ordering the developments, each musician within this trilogue brings into play, in addition to his talents as an instrumentalist, a whole personal system of electronic sound processing (pedals, filters, samples, reverbs and other loop effects…), selecting and metamorphosing, in the living and organic matter of an authentically collective discourse, particular events or motifs, to immediately reintroduce them into the flow and rework them, enriched with a sort of memorial thickness. It is in this in-between (in this "back and forth"), placed in a way facing their own discourse in a critical attitude akin to the "floating attention" experienced by psychoanalysis, that the three musicians, both creators and first readers of this layered collection of impressions and compiled temporalities, develop here the profound singularity of their universe—the essence of their "work" consisting of placing themselves in a position to simultaneously conceive, create, traverse, probe, and unfold the complexity of this emotional mille-feuille of an extraordinary density of materials, timbres, and vibratory intensities.

Unfolding and organizing itself without cutting or editing in a series of long, fluid and virtuoso sequence shots generating their dramaturgy through subtle effects of translations, magnifying glass and other changes of focal length digging abysmal depths of field, the music of Codex, at once dreamlike and romantic, muffled, meditative and violently impulsive, ultimately sounds like a kind of ambient whose temporality would be definitively less static than cleverly “slowed down” by this reflexive distancing. As if governed by this double, quasi-simultaneous movement of inscription and decipherment, its writing in real time on the blank page of an instant always to come was also the laying bare of enigmatic traces revealing the existence of a (pre)text constituting the secret architecture of improvisation - magically revived through the prism of this distorting mirror.
