Altair Engineering, Inc. has announced the release of WinProp 14.5, is the most complete suite of tools in the domain of wireless propagation and radio network planning. With applications ranging from satellite to terrestrial, from rural via urban to indoor radio links, WinProp’s innovative wave propagation models combine accuracy with short computation time.

New V14.5 released:

- ProMan: Acceleration of Standard Ray Tracing (SRT) simulations through multi-threading
Standard Ray Tracing involves the evaluation of many ray paths and interactions with many objects. This is especially the case when diffractions are included, since one diffracting ray spawns many new rays. Since rays are independent, ray tracing is an excellent candidate for multi-threading. The speed-up factor is close to the number of cores (threads) involved.
- ProMan: Consideration of Rx antenna polarization for antenna post processing
ProMan has been extended to consider the receiving (Rx) antenna polarization along definable routes. This builds on the version 14.1 feature in which the Rx antenna pattern (without polarization) can be included. For this purpose, the user can define routes in the ProMan GUI. The selected Rx antenna pattern, taking its polarization into account, can be superposed on the computed propagation paths that are saved during the propagation simulation. The orientation of the Rx antenna pattern is adjusted according to the direction of movement along the defined route. Using these data, the Rx antenna performance can be computed along routes to generate a virtual test drive. At this stage, the polarization (vertical or horizontal) can be considered in urbanscenarios for simulations in which ray tracing (SRT or IRT) with Fresnel coefficients is used.
- ProMan: Virtual Drive Test now also possible for Network Analysis
The Virtual Drive Test, activated through the RunMS button, used to be limited to Propagation Analysis. It has been extended to Network Analysis. This means that quantities like Signal-to-Noise-and-Interference Ratio (SNIR) and Data Rate can now take the receiving antenna pattern into account along specified trajectories.
- ProMan: Further improvements for the Rx antenna superposition
In version 14.5 now the Rx antenna superposition is possible for all scenarios (rural, urban, indoor) and the generated results can be also loaded in case topography is included. Besides for trajectories (along which the Rx antenna pattern orientation is adjusted according to the direction of movement) the Rx antenna postprocessing is also feasible for the area and point modes (then with fixed Rx antenna orientation).
- WallMan: Option to disable wall check for models with a large number of objects
While this check for model correctness is usually quick, for models with an exceptionally large number of objects it can become time consuming. If the user is confident that his model is correct, he can turn off this check and save time.
- WallMan: New ODA library for DXF/DWG conversion
The ODA library for conversion of geometries from AutoCAD’s DXF and DWG formats to WallMan’s internal format was updated to version 4.02.
- Licensing: Change in the number of HyperWorks Units
To bring the licensing for WinProp in line with that of other simulation tools in the HyperWorks suite, the number of HyperWorks Units (HWU) was increased to 25.
- ProMan: Bugs related to the inclusion of MIMOMan in ProMan, introduced in WinProp version 14.1, were fixed.
The bugs were related to an internal inconsistency in the number of pixels to be computed along a route in a virtual drive test, as well as cases where results for some pixels were not computed.
- ProMan: Several crashes have been fixed.
Several crashes have been fixed. They tended to be caused by using ProMan in an unintended way, e.g. selecting a result that hadn’t been computed yet. Such cases are now handled in a more user-friendly way.
- ProMan and other modules: Typographical errors have been fixed.
Several typographical errors that showed up in the graphical user interface have been fixed.

About Altair WinProp. WinProp, the main software suite of AWE Communications, is a standard software in the world of wireless propagation and radio network planning. Furthermore, all propagation models and network simulators of AWE Communications are available as plug-ins for many popular radio network planning tools and they can be integrated via their flexible APIs into any software tool of the customer.

The WinProp software suite combines several programs:

- ProMan - Wave Propagation Models and Radio Network Planning
- WallMan - Graphical Editor for vector databases (urban, indoor, time-variant,….)
- TuMan - Graphical Editor for tunnel databases (databases with profiles)
- AMan -Graphical Antenna Editor for 2D and 3D Antenna Patterns
- CoMan - Connectivity Simulator for Sensor and MESH networks
