Convergent Science has updated its CONVERGE CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software. Apart from fixes in the detected issues, this version hosts a couple of noteworthy enhancements as well.

CONVERGE 2.4.14 is a minor release that includes enhancements and bug fixes.

Solver
Enhancement: Improved error checking for several parameters used by the steady-statesolver and improved the behavior of the steady-state solver when reread_input is used.
Enhancement: You can now set a temporally varying profile for a pressure boundary condition at INFLOW and OUTFLOW boundaries in a steady-state simulation.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug in the steady-state solver that caused the relaxation factor of SORsolvers for turbulence quantities to reduce to infinitesimal values in some cases.
Bug fix: Fixed bugs in the steady-state solver related to how the solver determines when tostop AMR and when to reset max_cf l_u.
Bug fix: Fixed a parcel linking problem that occurred in some cases that included sealing.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug related to information transfer across ranks. This bug may havecaused some cases to crash or incorrectly transfer information across ranks.
Bug fix: In rare cases that included both the MUSCL scheme and a physical model basedon one or more passives (e.g., the G-Equation model), there were errors in the passivecalculations. This bug has been fixed. (This fix is a follow-up to a bug fix in 2.4.12.)
Input
Bug fix: In some cases CONVERGE would exit if a species name contained more than 16characters. This restriction has been removed.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug that caused CONVERGE to incorrectly give the "could not find a sidepolygon that surrounds the negative area side polygon" error message.
Bug fix: If species_dif f iusion_model = 1 in inputs.in, then CONVERGE erroneously requiredcombustion_f lag = 1 in inputs.in. This bug has been fixed, and this requirement is no longerpresent.
Output/ Post-Processing
Enhancement: You can now specify specific times at which CONVERGE will write thepost*.out files. This option requires use of the twrite_post.in file.
Enhancement: For simulations with the multiple reference frameapproach, you can nowdirect CONVERGE to write several additional quantities (relative velocity [velocity relativeto the reference frame], total pressure [sum of the static and dynamic pressures], totaltemperature [temperature at a stagnation point]) to the post*.out files.
Enhancement: In regions_f low.out, a column label has been changed from tot_temp toavg_temp to better reflect the quantity written to that column.
Enhancement: The monitor points feature has a new option for writing an additional lineof information.
Bug fix: For MRF simulations, CONVERGE wrote the relative velocity (relative to thereference frame) rather than the absolute velocity to the map*.out files. CONVERGE nowwrites the absolute velocity to the map output files, which is consistent with the velocitieswritten to the restart and post*.out files.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug that caused the post*.out files to be corrupted when les_mode waspresent in post.in.
Bug fix: If the post.in file included multiple instances of a single variable, CONVERGEwrote that variable multiple times to the post*.out files. CONVERGE no longer writesduplicate data to the post*.out files.
Bug fix: If the monitor_points.in file included multiple instances of a single variable,CONVERGE wrote that variable multiple times to the monitor_point*.out files. CONVERGEno longer writes duplicate data to the monitor_point*.out files.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug that caused incorrect mass flow rates to be written tomass_avg_f low.out and area_avg_f low.out.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug in the mole fraction output in regions_f low.out. Previously the molefraction data were incorrect in some cases in which both liquid species were present andregion_f low_f lag in inputs.in was non-zero.
Materials
Bug fix: Fixed a bug that caused some restarted VOF cases to crash because the liquid bulkmodulus was incorrectly being set to zero.
Boundaries
Enhancement: A new non-reflecting boundary condition is now available for velocityINFLOW and pressure OUTFLOW boundaries. This option is not yet available inCONVERGE Studio.
Initialization and Events
Enhancement: CONVERGE now allows multiple-hump valve lift profiles, provided youspecify the valve OPEN and CLOSE events in events.in (i.e., you cannot direct CONVERGEto automatically calculate the valve timings via VALVE events in events.in).
Bug fix: CONVERGE did not always correctly initialize velocities when an engine simulation started at top dead center (TDC). This bug has been fixed.
Combustion and Emissions
Enhancement: Accelerated the SAGE chemical source term calculations. This enhancement is only for the Intel build of CONVERGE.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug that prevented CONVERGE from reading the correct start and endtimes for the RIF model.
Bug fix: Added a check to ensure that the Case Directory for a simulation with the TKImodel (ecf m_auto_ignition_f lag = 1 or ecf m3z_auto_ignition_f lag = 1 in combust.in) containsthe TKI table file.
Chemistry Tools
Enhancement: CONVERGE now dynamically allocates the number of grid points in the1D premixed flamespeed solver.
Turbulence
Bug fix: Fixed stability problems in some simulations that included both combustionmodeling and the k-omega SST turbulence model.
Spray
Bug fix: Fixed a bug related that caused some cases with the adaptive film mesh approachto crash.
Bug fix: Some urea mapping variables were not initialized properly, which led tounpredictable behavior for some cases. This bug has been fixed.
FSI
Enhancement: CONVERGE now writes f si_spring*.out files when the FSI spring model isused.
Enhancement: The FSI events option, spring model, and stiction model no longer require aUDF. Simply set the appropriate parameters in f si.in and include the related file in the Case Directory.
CHT
Enhancement: Super-cycling now works for rotating and other types of movingboundaries. Previously super-cycling could be used only with stationary or translatingcomponents.
Bug fix: A source that was very close to a fluid/solid interface in a simulation with CHTmodeling was erroneously added to both streams (i.e., the point source was countedtwice). This bug has been fixed, and CONVERGE now assigns the source to only one of thetwo streams.
Bug fix: Fixed a bug that prevented the contact resistance model from working correctlyfor any geometry that had user-created disconnect triangles.
VOF
Bug fix: Cyclic injection for multiple injectors in VOF-spray one-way coupling did notwork (no injections occurred after the first one). This bug has been fixed.
Grid
Bug fix: Fixed a bug that caused a crash for some cases with SEQUENTIAL embedding ona boundary with sealing.

CONVERGE Studio v2.4_090117 is a minor release that includes enhancements and bugfixes.

General
Enhancement: In File > Export > Export STL (either ASCII or binary), you can now checkExport each boundary into a separate file and CONVERGE Studio exports each boundaryas a separate *.stl file.
Enhancement: Added the Expressions manager tool in Tools > Expressions manager. Use thistool to quickly organize and modify particular input parameters and define them as afunction of custom variables or other input parameters.
Enhancement: Added the Parametric studies tool in Tools > Parametric studies. Use this toolto easily configure a range of case setups with one or multiple varying input parameters.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug that caused CONVERGE Studio to crash when importing files withnon-English Latin characters in the file name.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in which saving, closing, and reopening a *.cvg file would causeCONVERGE Studio to erroneously change some parameter values. Previously,CONVERGE Studio would change an INTERFACE boundary with Flow through checkedto a WALL boundary in Case Setup > Boundary Conditions > Boundary and the value ofEnergy Solver from Solve total energy to Solve energy eq. in Case Setup > SimulationParameters > Run Parameters > Misc.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in which using File > Save As to save a *.cvg file to a location withoutsave permissions gives the indication that the file was successfully saved when in fact itwas not. Now, CONVERGE Studio reports an error.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug with the Shortcuts for geometry manipulation button in the Objectstoolbar. Previously, the shortcuts were active no matter if the button was toggled on or off
Geometry/Diagnosis/View Options Docks
Enhancement: Updated the sealing feature (Geometry > Seal). Projecting ports with thespecified Spline resolution may create too many vertices on the vertical (along the idealwall) parts of the projection. Now, CONVERGE Studio tries to find and coarsen verticeson these vertical parts as much as possible without deforming the ports.
Enhancement: In Geometry > Boundary > Flag, added a Fix slivers around selectedboundary feature. Use this feature to help flag triangles appropriately for the hot/coldsides of a gas turbine.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug that caused CONVERGE Studio to crash when clicking the SelectionStat. button for Vertices on selected triangles in Geometry > Repair > Compress > Vertex.
Case Setup Module
Enhancement: Added the ability to convert species fractions to mass fractions. In a speciesconfiguration table (such as in Initial Conditions & Events > Regions and initialization), right-click and choose Convert all fractions to Mass fractions. You can also paste data into thesetables via the option in the right-click menu or the Ctrl + v key combination.
Enhancement: When copying a boundary via the Copy button in Boundary Conditions >Boundary, the Do not overwrite "Region" checkbox is now checked by default.
Enhancement: For the spray portion of a VOF-spray one-way coupling simulation(Physical Models > Spray modeling > Injectors > Injector # configuration > Injected Species/RateShape), CONVERGE Studio now allows the CYCLIC timing type for the injectors in thesimulation. Configure this timing in the Time/Temp/TKE/EPS/Mass/Size tab.
Enhancement: For the G-Equation combustion model in Physical Models > Combustionmodeling > Models, you can now import and export *.h5 table files if you choose Table filefor Laminar flamespeed.
Enhancement: For VOF simulations intended for VOF-spray one-way coupling (Outputvof_map file checked in Physical Models > Volume of Fluid (VOF) modeling), the VOF mapdialog now includes a Nozzle ID column. This column is for reference and not editable.CONVERGE Studio generates the nozzle ID automatically per each injector group (byregion ID).
Enhancement: In the Boundary and Release tabs of Grid Control > Adaptive mesh refinement, you can now use the Copy button to copy existing AMR items.
Enhancement: Added output variable options (to be written to post*.out files) inOutput/Post-Processing > Post variable selection. You can now select Boundary referencetemperature, Numerical scheme in cell, and Numerical scheme in boundary cell.
Bug Fix: For profiles with CYCLIC timing type, CONVERGE Studio now calculates thecorrect start time when the supplied start time is outside the range of the cycle.Additionally, if the start time equals the first value in the profile, CONVERGE Studio cannow interpolate the profile correctly.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in Application Type > IC engine (crank-angle based) > Crevice.Previously, CONVERGE Studio incorrectly wrote bound_id1 and bound_id2 to crevice.in forthe keywords associated with the selections for Piston Boundary and Cylinder WallBoundary. Now, CONVERGE Studio correctly writes boundary_id1 and boundary_id2.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in Materials > Gas simulation > Gas transport data > Gas calculator.Previously, the calculator only generated data up to 4990 K. Now, the calculator generatesdata up to 5000 K as required by CONVERGE.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug that occurred when exporting Energy solver in inputs.in via Simulation Parameters > Run parameters > Misc. Now when exporting a CONVERGE 2.4 case toversion 2.3, CONVERGE Studio correctly converts the energy_solver andsolve_total_energy_flag parameters.
Bug Fix: In Initial Conditions & Events > Regions and initialization > Combustion Products, theHelp icon now displays the documentation for this tool.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in the Spray rate calculator in Case Setup > Physical Models > Spraymodeling > Injectors > [Injector #] configuration > Tools > Spray rate preview. Previously, themixture density calculation was incorrect.
Bug Fix: For steady-state simulations (Steady solver for Solver in Simulation Parameters >Run parameters), CONVERGE Studio no longer allows or validates the Injection durationparameter in Physical Models > Spray modeling > Injectors > [Injector #] configuration >Time/Temp/Mass/Size. This parameter applicable for transient simulations only.
Bug Fix: When G-Equation is selected as the combustion model in Physical Models >Combustion modeling > Models and Use kernel parcels for ignition is selected in the Sparktab, CONVERGE Studio now verifies that there exists a source with type User and Shapetype of Box (configured via Physical Models > Source/sink modeling). This is the configurationrequired by CONVERGE.
Bug Fix: In Physical Models > Emissions modeling, Soot alpha correction model is onlyallowed when Particle Mimic (PM) is selected.
Bug Fix: In Physical Models > Source/sink modeling, CONVERGE Studio no longer allowsvolume-based units (e.g.,m3) in conjunction with a Line source (Shape > Shape type).
Bug Fix: In Grid Control > Fixed embedding, using Copy to copy an existing BOUNDARYembedding no longer erroneously copies the boundary as well.
Chemistry Module
Enhancement: Added the ability to convert between mass and mole fractions. In a speciesconfiguration table, right-click and choose the desired conversion.
Bug Fix: Updated the options that are available when performing mechanism reductionwith the Mechanism Reduction tool. CONVERGE Studio no longer allows in Zero-DSimulation > Solver setup:Sensitivity,Kicgen output, Double ignition delay, or GeneticAlgorithm output. In the Zero-D Cases.in Template Tool, CONVERGE Studio no longerallows CEQ enthalpy & pressure or CEQ temperature & pressure for Constant type.
CONGO Module
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in which CONVERGE Studio did not allow you to paste text correctlyin the CONGO > CONGO dialog box when the pasted text contained spaces as delimiters.
Line Plotting Module
Enhancement: The Calculate statistics tool in Menu Bar > Tools now calculates the areaunder the curves in the active plot via the trapezoidal rule.
Enhancement: In Menu Bar > Tools > Fast Fourier transform, the FFT tool now supportsmultiple datasets from separate files. Also, you can export the inverse FFT calculationparameters to a file by checking Export calculation parameters to file.
Enhancement: In Main Toolbar > Preview plot data, you can now select and edit cells.
Bug Fix: Re-sized the Update all base directories dialog box such that all columns are visibleby default on more screen resolutions.
Bug Fix: Previously, when splitting a cyclic dataset into multiple cycles via the Split intocycles… button in Dataset name - dataset editor > Dataset type > Cyclic, CONVERGE Studioerroneously showed each dataset name twice in the legend.

About CONVERGE. CONVERGE is a revolutionary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program thateliminates the grid generation bottleneck from the simulation process. CONVERGE wasdeveloped by engine simulation experts and is straightforward to use for both engine andnon-engine simulations. Unlike many CFD programs, CONVERGE automaticallygenerates a perfectly orthogonal, structured grid at runtimebased on simple, user-definedgrid control parameters. This grid generation method completely eliminates the need tomanually generate a grid. In addition, CONVERGE offers many other features to expeditethe setup process and to ensure that your simulations are as computationally efficient aspossible.

In this demonstration reel, we show the simulation of a number of different compressors, where CONVERGE CFD easily handles complex geometries, moving boundaries, and fluid-structure interactions (FSI). Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) ensures that flow is resolved sufficiently, especially around valves.
