COMSOL, the leading provider of multiphysics modeling and simulation software, has released an update to COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3 software, is a general-purpose software platform, based on advanced numerical methods, for modeling and simulating physics-based problems. All COMSOL software products undergo stability improvements that are introduced as updates.

COMSOL SOFTWARE VERSION 5.3a UPDATE 2 - Released February 27, 2018:

COMSOL Multiphysics
- Fixed a problem with highlighting of search results in the Documentation window.
- Corrected an issue that made it impossible to copy and paste text from the Help window in the COMSOL Desktop environment.
- Added the Moving Mesh node, available as a subnode to Component > Definitions, to the model tree when selecting Modify model configuration for a study step. The available options are: Solve for and Disable in solvers.
- Improved handling of the Prescribed Normal Mesh Velocity boundary conditions on deforming domains. The change makes domain volume changes consistent with the prescribed normal velocity.
- Increased robustness for Deforming Domain features. The default mesh smoothing method has changed from Laplace to Yeoh. The Yeoh method is more robust at a small additional computational cost.
- Moving Mesh nodes, added under Definitions > Moving Mesh, now include an Override section that contains information about how such nodes override each other. It is also possible to move such nodes and to copy and paste them.
- Added the capability for PDE-based Mathematics interfaces to be active on domains that are part of an Absorbing Layer feature.
- Corrected a problem with Geometry selections so that those that are dependent on a parameter maintain the same dependence when used under Results.
- Fixed a problem with using Function Switch nodes that accessed file resources.
- Corrected user-defined model inputs so that they now show all components instead of only the in-plane components.
- Fixed a problem with search parameters in the Application Libraries window.
- Added support for search parameters based on results in the Application Library window. You can now search using strings such as @dataset, @numerical, @export, and @report.
- Japanese-language versions of the Software License Agreement and the Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics PDF documents are now made available when installing the software in Japanese.
COMSOL Server
- Improved the alignment of custom thumbnails in the COMSOL Server Application Library page.
Acoustics Module
- Corrected an issue with the Wall condition so that Rayleigh roughness can be used in combination with a user-defined absorption coefficient.
- Fixed a problem with the definition of the fluid bulk modulus postprocessing variable in the Poroelastic Waves interface.
CAD Import Module
- Fixed a problem where the automatic check-in of the CADREADER license file feature was delayed in some environments. The CADREADER license file feature enables the ability to import CAD data files in the CAD-interfacing products.
CFD Module
- Corrected a problem with the shape function order for certain Bubbly Flow variables when used in combination with P2+P2 and P3+P3 elements.
- Corrected a few problems that could occur when using phase-specific turbulence models and the Euler-Euler interface.
- Fixed a problem with the Interior Fan condition for the Reacting Flow multiphysics coupling.
- Fixed a problem with the Interior Fan and Screen conditions for turbulent nonisothermal flow models.
Chemical Reaction Engineering Module
- Corrected the reaction rate constant for surface reactions imported from the CHEMKIN software.
Electrochemistry Module
- Corrected a sign error in the potential shift for models using an Ion-Exchange Membrane Boundary node.
Fatigue Module
- Corrected a problem where the Matrix Histogram plots were not generated for a Cumulative Damage interface.
Heat Transfer Module
- Fixed a problem with the stabilization formulation for models where a Translational Motion feature is combined with a user-defined coordinate system.
- Corrected the temperature dependency for general thin layers material.
- Added support for multiple instances of the Medium Properties feature in the Radiative Beam in Absorbing Media physics interface.
LiveLink for MATLAB
- Fixed an issue with mphsave on Windows operating systems that prevented saving a file to an unmapped network drive.
- Fixed a problem with mphplot that prevented older versions of the MATLAB software to work with COMSOL Multiphysics software version 5.3a.
LiveLink for SOLIDWORKS
- Improved performance when opening a file that contains selections with a large number of entities in the selection.
Nonlinear Structural Mechanics Module
- Corrected an error in the Storakers hyperelastic material model.
Optimization Module
- Fixed a problem that made it impossible to solve optimization models that have no physics-based study step.
Ray Optics Module
- Corrected some transformations of the Stokes parameters and phase when tracing polarized rays through a graded-index medium.
Semiconductor Module
- Added support for including a Perfectly Matched Layer feature in a model containing a Schrödinger Equation interface with only a Semiconductor Module license.
Structural Mechanics Module
- Improved the Membrane interface formulation for cases where an additive strain decomposition was selected in a geometrically nonlinear study. A nonlinear strain formulation is now used instead of a previous linear strain formulation.
- Corrected an "Undefined Variable" error in the Thin Film Damping interface.
- Added support for generalized plane strain when combining piezoelectric and linear elastic materials.
- Corrected some problems that would occur when using friction in a Bolt Thread Contact feature.

Comsol Multiphysics 5.3.1.229

About Comsol Multiphysics. You can use COMSOL Multiphysics and the suite of add-on products for any combination of electrical, mechanical, fluid flow, or chemical applications. The software lets you simulate any physics-based system that can be described with partial differential equations (PDEs). Version 5.3 provides simulation specialists with notable performance improvements and powerful app design and deployment capabilities with new modeling and development tools, solvers, and user-driven features. In many cases, users will experience a speedup of ten times or more in software responsiveness, such as in preprocessing tasks for handling models with several thousand boundaries and domains. With version 5.3 the boundary element method (BEM) is available for modeling electrostatics and corrosion effects. The Boundary Element method enables users to simulate models with infinite domains and voids, as well as to quickly set up simulations that combine wires, beams, surfaces, and solids in the same model. Typical uses for this functionality include the modeling of electrical cathodic protection, cables, or capacitive sensors. The algebraic multigrid (AMG) solver allows for solving large fluid flow problems with a single mesh level. The simulation process is more robust for problems such as fluid-structure interaction in a solar panel. Users handling large CFD models will benefit from the new algebraic multigrid (AMG) solver implemented in version 5.3. The AMG solver requires only a single mesh level and is now the default option for many fluid flow and transport phenomena interfaces. Users modeling turbulent flows can benefit from more robust computations with the automatic treatment of walls. This feature blends high-fidelity low-Reynolds formulation with wall functions. A Powerful Suite of Development Tools for Increased Productivity: The Model Builder now more rapidly handles geometry and mesh operations for models with large arrays and complicated solid operations in 3D. A new option for automatic geometry defeaturing through virtual geometry operations is now available to users. With the introduction of model methods in version 5.3, it is easy to automate repetitive operations directly in the Model Builder. The Application Libraries feature more than 50 new and updated tutorial models, allowing users to quickly adopt new features, tools, and modeling techniques. The tutorials span several areas, from permanent magnet motors, cables, and horn antennas, to supersonic flows, electronics cooling, and vibration and noise in a gearbox. More Functionality for App Design and Deployment: The Application Builder allows simulation specialists to create apps based on their multiphysics models. The app interface can be easily customized and accessed via a browser or a Windows client, which connects to a local installation of COMSOL Server. Updates to COMSOL Server include comprehensive log files for user activity as well as a centralized cluster administration setting in the COMSOL Server web interface for easy setup of running apps on clusters. In the Application Builder, app designers can now define customized actions when clicking on plots in graphics objects, enabling the easy creation of interactive apps.
