- New PLTSURF entry introduced for easier PEM parts coupling surfacedefintions.
- Restart support for models with invariant PEM components.
- Temperature dependency added for frequency dependent materials.
- SOL 108 (direct frequency response) support added for models with PEM parts.

Rotordynamics
- New 2D Bush (CBUSH2DA) and Squeeze File Damper (NLRSFDA) user-defined subroutines enabled to include inertia & acceleration terms respectively.
- Integration of user-defined squeeze file damper libraries.
- Cross-coupling inertia terms specification for 2D Bush (CBUSH2D) element.
- Frequency dependent 2D Bush (PBSH2DT) property with tabular input.

Composites
- Layered Solid and Solid-Shell elements available in linear solutions.

Fatigue
- Control of the number of angles to be analyzed when using critical plane analysis.
- New stress/strain output requests via FATIGUE case control.
- More control over the amound of results data returned at critical locations.
- Significant performance improvement of SOL 112 duty cycle jobs.
- Direct access to dynamic load data in multi-channel time histroy files via new TABLRPC entry.

Topology Optimization
- Anisotropic materials support added.
- Over-hang constraints for additive manufacturing.
- New DRESP2 response types: Magnigtude of Displacement and maximization of stiffness and frequency.

Nonlinear
- Nonlinear Buckling available in SOL 400
- Allow represtentation of imperfect structural geometry through use modification of grid coordinates based on displacements or modes from a previous run.
- MATVE limitation of five scale factor/time constraint data pairs removed.

HPC
- CASI (Iterative) Solver support available for inertia relief analysis.
- Faster Global Transformation Matrix for ACMS to speed up Nastran interface to MSC Adams and AVL EXCITE.

MSC Nastran 2020 Release Highlights

MSC Nastran is a multidisciplinary structural analysis application used by engineers to perform static, dynamic, and thermal analysis across the linear and nonlinear domains, complemented with automated structural optimization and award winning embedded fatigue analysis technologies, all enabled by high performance computing.

Engineers use MSC Nastran to ensure structural systems have the necessary strength, stiffness, and life to preclude failure (excess stresses, resonance, buckling, or detrimental deformations) that may compromise structural function and safety. MSC Nastran is also used to improve the economy and passenger comfort of structural designs.

Manufacturers leverage MSC Nastran’s unique multidisciplinary approach to structural analysis at various points in the product development process.

MSC Nastran is based on sophisticated numerical methods, the most prominent being the Finite Element Method. Nonlinear FE problems may be solved with built-in implicit numerical techniques. A number of optimization algorithms are available, including MSCADS and IPOPT. The fatigue capability in MSC Nastran has been developed jointly by nCode International Ltd. and MSC Software.
