The Microsoft development team is pleased to announce the availability of Cumulative Update 22 to Exchange Server 2016. This update include fixes for customer reported issues, all previously released security updates, and a new security feature.

Cumulative Update 22 for Exchange Server 2016 (KB5005333)

This September 2021 cumulative update (CU) install Exchange Emergency Mitigation (EM) service. This service is designed to help secure your servers that are running Microsoft Exchange Server by applying mitigations to address any potential threats against them. It uses the cloud-based Office Config Service (OCS) to check for and download available mitigations and to send diagnostic data to Microsoft.

This CU has following additional prerequisites:
- IIS URL Rewrite Module
- Universal C Runtime in Windows (KB 2999226)

Cumulative Update 22 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 was released on September 28, 2021. It includes fixes for nonsecurity issues and all previously released fixes for security and nonsecurity issues. These fixes will also be included in later cumulative updates for Exchange Server 2016.

This update also includes new daylight saving time (DST) updates for Exchange Server 2016.

New feature in this cumulative update
Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 now supports integration with Windows Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI). This feature enables an AMSI-capable antivirus or antimalware solution to scan content in HTTP requests that're sent to the Exchange Server. Additionally, it will block a malicious request before it's handled by Exchange.

Issues that this cumulative update fixes
This cumulative update also fixes the issues that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

5007043 Exchange Server SU updates Add/Remove Programs incorrectly (KB5007043)

Exchange Server 2016 includes a number of advanced features for organizations to have a resilient deployment of email across multiple customer sites. It is closely integrated into other products such as Office, SharePoint, Skype for Business (formerly Microsoft Lync) and Office 365, and it shares a similar interface to Exchange Server 2013.

Many of the features in Exchange 2016 were first deployed in the cloud with Office 365 before coming to the on-premises version of Exchange. However, some features such as Clutter won't be included because they require Office Graph to work.

Exchange 2016 includes improved features and capabilities from previous versions of Exchange. These include a faster database availability group (DAG) failover time, which dropped from about 30 seconds to about 18 seconds, and a 22% lower input/output operations per second (IOPS) from Exchange 2013.

Exchange 2016 combines the mailbox and Client Access Server (CAS) roles, which should allow for simpler designs and architecture. It also includes support for BitLocker to provide additional protection for data at rest as well as enhancements to support hybrid Exchange setups.

Cumulative Update 21 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 was released on June 29, 2021. This cumulative update includes fixes for nonsecurity issues and all previously released fixes for security and nonsecurity issues. These fixes will also be included in later cumulative updates for Exchange Server 2016.

This update also includes new daylight saving time (DST) updates for Exchange Server 2016.

Exchange team veteran Greg Taylor explains how the on-premises version of Exchange 2016 benefits from the proven cloud-based features and functionality of Exchange Online.
