- We have updated the 2020 start date for daylight saving time (DST) in the Kingdom of Morocco. For more information, see KB4557900.
- Security updates to Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Media, Windows Shell, Microsoft Xbox, Microsoft Edge, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Cryptography, Windows Authentication, Windows Kernel, Windows Virtualization, Windows Update Stack, Windows Core Networking, Internet Information Services, Windows Network Security and Containers, Windows Active Directory, Windows Server, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

Important note about accessibility

We are aware Narrator and NVDA users that seek the latest release of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium may experience some difficulty when navigating and reading certain web content. Narrator, NVDA and the Edge teams are aware of these issues. Users of legacy Microsoft Edge will not be affected. NVAccess has released a NVDA 2019.3 that resolves the known issue with Edge.

These kits and tools are available for use with Windows 10 for desktop editions (Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education) and Windows 10 Mobile for development and manufacturing.

Download the Windows ADK to install tools and documentation for OEMs and ODMs to customize Windows 10 images, assess the quality and performance of systems or components, and to deploy Windows operating systems to new computers. The Windows ADK includes Windows Configuration Designer, the Windows Assessment Toolkit, the Windows Performance Toolkit, and several new and improved deployment tools that can help you automate a large-scale deployment of Windows 10.

What's new in the Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 2004

Windows Performance Recorder (WPR)

New SkipPDBGen Option - During WPR stop, you can now specify in the command line the ability to skip generation of PDBs (NGen & Embedded) to help reduce trace stop time.

- wpr -stop <recording filename> <Problem description> [-skipPdbGen]

What's new in Windows 10 (WDK), version 2004

This section describes new features and updates for driver development in Windows 10, version 2004 (Windows 10 May 2020 Update).

Windows Drivers

Windows 10, version 2004 is a transition release for universal drivers. In this release, universal drivers still exist, but are being replaced by Windows Drivers. A Windows Driver is a universal driver with a few additional requirements.

Windows Drivers are distinguished from Windows Desktop Drivers. While Windows Drivers run on Windows 10X and Windows 10 Desktop editions, Windows Desktop Drivers run only on Windows 10 Desktop editions.

No changes are required to universal drivers for the version 2004 release, but documentation is available now so that you can plan ahead for upcoming changes.

Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA)

WHEA includes a new interface (v2). For info about how to register as an error source and report errors, see Using WHEA on Windows 10.

Display and Graphics Drivers

Several new and enhanced display and graphics driver features are available in Windows 10, version 2004, including D3D12 mesh shader support, sampler support, raytracing extensions, video motion estimation, and video protected resources support.

Storage Drivers

A storage miniport driver can now get and set more information about a device's internal state, including the ability to reset a device. See IOCTL_STORAGE_GET_DEVICE_INTERNAL_LOG and StorPortHardwareReset as good starting points.

Windows Debugger

WinDbg Preview

Updates to WinDbg Preview to cover new features such as WinDbg Preview - Timelines. Time travel timelines allows for the visualization of time travel code execution traces.

Stop Codes

- Updates to the Bug Check Code Reference topics and the addition of new parameters to topics such as Bug Check 0x1A: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and Bug Check 0xC4: DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION.
- New stop codes such as Bug Check 0x1DA: HAL_BLOCKED_PROCESSOR_INTERNAL_ERROR, Bug Check 0x1A2: WIN32K_CALLOUT_WATCHDOG_BUGCHECK and Bug Check 0x119: VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR.

Driver Security

Updates to the Driver security to use the BinSkim tool.

Features on Demand (FODs) are Windows features that can be added at any time. Common features include language resources like handwriting recognition or other features like the .NET Framework (.NetFx3). When Windows 10 or Windows Server needs a new feature, it can request the feature package from Windows Update.

Some FODs come preinstalled with Windows and are all you need to ship a Windows device. You can, however, add additional FODs to support additional hardware features or enable certain use cases.

You can use either DISM /image:<path_to_image> /get-capabilities or DISM /online /get-capabilities to see which Features on Demand are available in your image of Windows 10.

You can also preinstall FODs so they're ready if a user needs them. FODs are distributed as .cab files on the Feature on Demand ISO and you can use DISM to add a FOD to a Windows image. If you're using the FOD ISO to preinstall FODs, make sure you're using the FOD ISO that matches your Windows image version.

Note: Add language packs, FODs, and apps, in that order, prior to installing an update. If you add an update prior to adding language packs, FODs, and apps you'll have to reinstall the update.

The Windows Hardware Lab Kit (Windows HLK) is a test framework used to test hardware devices for Windows 10 and all versions of Windows Server starting with Windows Server 2016. To qualify for the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program, your product must pass certain tests using the Windows HLK.

If you’re developing for Windows 10 or qualified versions of Windows Server, you must use the correct version of the HLK. Using the correct kit helps you ensure that the drivers and the system you develop are certified as compatible with Windows 10 or Windows Server.

Note: Certify using the Virtual HLK (VHLK)! The VHLK is the entire Hardware Lab Kit pre-installed and pre-configured on a VHDX, ready to boot as a virtual machine. Use the VHLK to save setup time, quickly stand up a controller, and run Windows Hardware Certification from a virtual machine.

Microsoft released the Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows 10 version 2004. As the version of the operating system on which it is based, the SDK is also known as build 19041.

This new version allows developers to write applications that specifically target new features in this release.

You can add languages and regional support to Windows version 2004.

You can install LIPs over any edition of Windows version 2004, but they provide a translated version of only the most widely used dialog boxes, menu items, and help content. To install a LIP, you will need to have the required parent language installed on your PC.

Windows version 2004 installations start with at least one language pack and its language components. You can add:

Language Interface Packs (LIPs): Partially-localized language pack. Requires a base language pack. In Windows version 2004, LIPs are delivered as .cab files, for example, C:\Languages\es-ES\lp.cab.

** When you add a language pack to a Windows 10 or Windows Server image, you can also add Language Features on Demand (FODs) to enable additional functionality.

We're once again approaching that time of the year when Microsoft releases a new feature update to Windows 10. In line with the version numbering scheme we've been seeing, this update is currently known as Windows 10 version 2004, or 20H1, because it's being released in the first half of the year.

While we did get a feature update in the second half of 2019, there was only a very small number of additions, and those additions were also minor in nature. It was more about refining the previous update than making significant leaps forward. Surprisingly, even though version 2004 is a more significant feature update, it's one of the smaller ones, despite having a longer period of testing with Insiders than what we've seen before.
