avi.NET is a free of charge application that can convert MPEG-2 media files to AVI movie files. This software can also add subtitles to encode into the AVI file. There are many commercial programs available to allow you to convert a DVD to an AVI, though I will make quite a bold statement, you will not find any commercial program to convert a DVD MPEG file to an AVI that gives you 'better' quality than that of the many freely available alternatives. It's all down to how much energy you are prepared to put in.

So buy a product that does most of the thinking for you, doesn't give you many options, and gives you a somewhat poor finished AVI file or, spend vast amounts of time learning all the different formats and options to get the best out of your conversions. avi.NET requires minimal user intervention but still delivers excellent quality results. avi.NET will allow you to load in both MPEG-1 (VCD) and MPEG-2 (DVD/HDTV) files and convert them to AVI. Whether it be DivX or XviD that is chosen as the video codec, the resulting AVI file will be 100% standalone player compatible. It should play in your home dvd avi player just fine.

Using avi.NET is simple, select 'IN' and load in your movie file, usually a VOB or MPG file. The file will 'INDEX' (process will take a couple of minutes) and once completed you'll notice many options have automatically been set and the movie is playing, you can now select 'ADD' to add the job to the batch list.

avi.NET allows you to convert a DVD movie, MPEG-1 (VCD) or MPEG-2 (DVD, HDTV, SVCD) media file to an AVI movie file. For their size, AVI files can be excellent quality and you can fit between three and six good quality movies on a single dvdr disk. avi.NET also allows you to select different audio tracks if you require and even choose subtitles to encode into the AVI file. avi.NET allows you to encode an AVI using the latest versions of either the DivX codec or XviD codec.

avi.NET will allow you to load in your ripped VOB file, select your desired options, and convert to AVI, either XviD or DivX, both DivX 5 and 6 are supported. All AVI's made using avi.NET are SAP friendly, whether DivX or XviD codec used. Obviously they'll play just fine on your PC too. I'll now go into more detail about the usage and various options in avi.NET.

avi.NET will accept both MPEG1 or MPEG2 files for input, which includes DVD, SVCD and VCD. Upon loading a file, avi.NET will invoke DGIndex (included) to index the input file and give us the information needed for us to proceed. When our file has finished 'indexing' you'll see the movie start to play/preview.
