http://www.speedtree.com/html/speedtreemax.htmThe SpeedTreeMAX suite of plugins provide users of Autodesk’s 3ds max with unprecedented flexibility for adding exceptionally realistic, three dimensional trees to their scenes without the huge resource and rendering requirements of other high-detail virtual trees. SpeedTreeMAX imports trees modeled with SpeedTreeCAD (automatically creating materials in the process) and allows you to position them throughout your scene. A series of rollouts allows you to adjust almost every tree parameter, including the shape defining seed, size, and viewport display. You can even launch SpeedTreeCAD directly to edit tree models without leaving the main application.
1. SpeedTreeMAX
SpeedTreeMAX is the plugin that reads the .spt files created by SpeedTreeCAD and allows them to be rendered in 3ds max. Users can control the size, random seed, wind space warp association, and viewport display method via a series of rollouts on the “Modify” panel. Want your tree to blow in the wind? Just create a wind space warp (native in 3ds max) and assign it to the tree object. That's it. As the wind changes its direction and strength, SpeedTree will automatically adapt. We’ve also included a wind scalar value, just in case something else in the scene is using the same wind object and doesn’t necessarily use the same units.
New trees can be created using the parameters section of the interface. Every tree is based upon an integer seed that feeds the random number generator. By clicking the compute button (with the randomize box checked), an entirely different tree will be created with a new seed. Don’t like that one? Click compute again. Like it? Use the new seed in.
2. SpeedShadow
SpeedShadow is a shadow map plugin that enhances 3ds max's standard shadow maps so that the opacity mapped leaves on SpeedTree models cast correct shadows. Because standard shadow maps do not support opacity maps, SpeedShadow allows max users to have the speed benefits of shadow maps without losing accuracy.
3. SpeedForest
Because SpeedTree allows users to create low-detail trees, we felt that foresting controls were a natural extension. Simply draw a spline (with or without holes) and populate it with trees at whatever density you want. SpeedTree will even follow the curvature of the terrain they are placed upon. SpeedForest is a utility plugin that allows 3ds max users to use boundary shapes (lines, circles, etc.) and terrain meshes to define regions of trees. Just select the objects you want to be in the forest (they don’t even have to be SpeedTrees!), enter how many of each one you would like to see, select the boundary shapes and terrain meshes and SpeedForest does the rest.
