Der stets charakterlich korrekte britische Polizist Richard Poole wird auf die Karibikinsel Saint-Marie geschickt, um den Tod seines Vorgängers zu untersuchen. Nachdem es ihm gelingt, die Ermittlungen erfolgreich abzuschließen, wird er als dessen Nachfolger eingesetzt.
Der Inspector verzichtet dabei auch in dieser neuen Umgebung nicht auf seinen unpraktikablen schwarzen Anzug, der nicht unbedingt für eine exotische Tropeninsel gemacht wurde. An der Seite Pooles arbeitet Det. Sgt. Camille Bordey, die zuvor als verdeckte Ermittlerin tätig war. Sie gilt als eine der besten Polizisten des ganzen Bezirkes. Außerdem dabei sind Dwayne Myers, der schon vor Pooles Ankunft in dem Revier ermittelte, sowie Fidel Best, der Jüngste des Teams. Vorgesetzter von Poole ist Comm. Selwyn Patterson, der sich jedoch eher um seine potentiellen politischen Ambitionen schert als um die Polizeiarbeit.
