Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, is on the other side of the gate. He has befriended someone who resembles his brother, Al, and has met a gypsy resembling Rose. He finds out that the Germans are planning on opening the gate, and attack the other side, which is Ed and Al's home. Although Al has learned a lot, he cannot stop all of them, and Ed cannot use Alchemy while in the other side. Ed tries to stop them, and Al just tries to be able to talk to his brother again, who everyone else thinks is gone.

The original Fullmetal Alchemist series has often been lauded by some as one of the greatest anime series ever, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and Death Note. It is rightly held with such high esteem as the story of two brothers struggling to redeem themselves and fix the wrongs created by the tragic choices they made during their childhood is one of the most emotionally involving well crafted examples of anime out there. After the success the show had and the cliffhanger ending fans were left with, a movie adaptation was always a given, and Conqueror of Shamballa is what was delivered in 2005.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa picks up two years after the events in the Underground City in Central. Ed (Vic Mignogna) has found himself in Germany, now 1923, where his alchemic powers have been stripped away from him, and the world is governed by the laws of modern science. Against a backdrop of social unrest following the events of the first World War and rumours of an uprising by the Socialist Party, Ed finds himself tagging along with a promising rocket engineer Alphonse Heiderich (Jason Liebrecht).

Bearing more than a passing resemblance to his younger brother, Ed has set his sites on learning all he can off Al and harnessing the technology to open the gate back to his home. However, he is not the only one interested in reaching the other side. Dietlinde Eckhart (Kelly Manison) and the Thule society intend on travelling to what they believe is the mythical world of Shamballa and use the weapons and power gained from the other side to assist Hitler in his plans to gain control with the Nazi party. Meanwhile on the otherside, Alphonse Elric (Aaron Dismuke) is searching hard for a way to bring his brother back through the gate.

The staff have managed to accurately transfer to the big screen the features that made the TV series so endearing. When the action starts it comes thick and fast, and these scenes allow you to see all the improvements a larger budget has allowed. The amount of attention paid to detail is evident all throughout, with animation being slick and smooth. Emotionally charged scenes play out exactly how we’d like them to, with well written dialogue and equally adept performances by all the VA’s. Snappy comedic scenes break up the tension and intrigue well, but nothing ever feels unnecessary.

The only negative you could levy against the movie is often the same you hear when any large cast show is adapted to the big screen. The vast amount of characters from the show are underused or underutilised, with characters like Mustang, Winry and Wrath suffering from lack of screentime, but this is not their story. Fullmetal Alchemist has always been about two brothers journeying together, and it is fitting that the film shines its focus mostly entirely on Edward and Alphonse.

Though often cliched and transparent, Shamballa is still a gripping story. It manages to expertly mix the notion of brotherly love and redemption with the political agenda of those on the other side, and never finds itself dropping the ball. Fullmetal Alchemist:Conqueror of Shamballa left a wide smile on my face upon its conclusion and with a sense that the story told in the anime had come to a strong and fitting end.
