Alfred takes a few days off to clear his head, riding through Berlin and meeting strangers; although he ultimately returns to Lisa, the ending remains open…. In East Germany's closest counterpart to early Godard, Jürgen Böttcher grasps the life of 20-year-olds in Prenzlauer Berg with social and regional exactness and translates it into a universal language. The film was banned in 1966 and Böttcher never returned to feature filmmaking.

There has never been a face quite like that of Giulietta Masina. Her husband, the legendary Federico Fellini, directs her as Gelsomina in La strada, the film that launched them both to international stardom. Gelsomina is sold by her mother into the employ of Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a brutal strongman in a traveling circus. When Zampanò encounters an old rival in highwire artist the Fool (Richard Basehart), his fury is provoked to its breaking point. With La strada, Fellini left behind the familiar signposts of Italian neorealism for a poetic fable of love and cruelty, evoking brilliant performances and winning the hearts of audiences and critics worldwide. The Criterion Collection is proud to present La strada, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1956.

Guillermo del Toro made an auspicious and audacious feature debut with Cronos, a highly unorthodox tale about the seductiveness of the idea of immortality. Kindly antiques dealer Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi) happens upon an ancient golden device in the shape of a scarab, and soon finds himself the possessor and victim of its sinister, addictive powers, as well as the target of a mysterious American named Angel (a delightfully crude and deranged Ron Perlman). Featuring marvelous special makeup effects and the haunting imagery for which del Toro has become world-renowned, Cronos is a dark, visually rich, and emotionally captivating fantasy.

Ben Kingsley stars as celebrated Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich in this lengthy historical biography. Along with Prokofiev, Shostakovich is considered among the elite of the 20th-century composers to emerge from his country. Striving to be true to his art form, the composer was caught in the political crossfire of the Stalin regime and was criticized for being politically ambiguous. Under constant pressure, Shostakovich silenced many of his critics when he remained in Leningrad during the Nazi siege to complete his stirring 7th symphony. Terrence Rigby plays Stalin, with Ronald Pickup as the ill-fated Soviet official Tukhachevsky, another of Stalin's many victims. Shostakovich lived until 1975.

Bart Vegter (1940-2011) was self-taught and derived his primary inspiration from the methods of filmmakers such as Frans Zwartjes and Paul de Mol, and experimental cinema from the 1970s and 1980s. Before starting to shoot abstract films at age forty, Bart Vegter graduated from the Eindhoven University of Technology and worked at the laboratories of Shell and Philips. His oeuvre may be modest in size, but it excels in its eye for detail and craftsmanship. During the early years, he worked with traditional animation techniques. However, his last few films such as Nacht-Licht [Night Light], Space-Modulation and Forest-Views display a more idiosyncratic style attributable to the software he wrote.

In this film, Kluge continues his fascination with history, culture and cinema as he examines the close of the 20th century. Opening with a production of Verdi’s Tosca, he sets up a contrast between the treatment of moral and aesthetic issues in the 19th century and their examination in the cinema. Several stories – with characters who are mainly nameless, such as “The big boss, a man in a hurry,” Homeworker,” “Superfluous employee” – are juxtaposed, creating a filmic essay, a montage of ideas and reflections on the present, a present which affects our views of the past and our hopes for the future. At the center, serving perhaps as a metaphor for both his film and cinema itself, is the story of a director who goes blind while working on his latest film. He continues working, his head full of images, trying to create what he cannot see.

Seven Women, Seven Sins (1986) represents a quintessential moment in film history. The women filmmakers invited to direct for the seven sins were amongst the world’s most renown: Helke Sander (Gluttony), Bette Gordon (Greed), Maxi Cohen (Anger), Chantal Akerman (Sloth), Valie Export (Lust), Laurence Gavron (Envy), and Ulrike Ottinger (Pride). Each filmmaker had the liberty of choosing a sin to interpret as they wished. The final film reflected this diversity, including traditional narrative fiction, experimental video, a musical, a radical documentary, and was delivered in multiple formats from 16, super 16, video and 35mm.
