A handful of mysterious Japanese women take part in a deranged web show that makes them strip off their clothes when they lose a round of Mahjong. When there is nothing left to hide, secrets are revealed and they must take their punishment.

The movie opens to glamorous ringside announcer M.C. Kato and his lovely assistant Ranran Tachibana. They explain that the game of Strip Mahjong not only reveals the soul of its contestants, but also gives them the chance to win ten million dollars. Sounds great, right? Then why are four ladies chained together and being led into the arena against their will? The contestants are given a quick bio and each come from a unique walk of life. Yuka Kashiwagi/Yukarin is the leader of pop group “Afterschool Expedition” and uses her youth as a weapon.

Aoi Onizuka has won countless acquittals as a young, top class lawyer. She is also a front runner in a betting pool conducted before the bout. Misuzu Kaneda is an uptown girl. The betting pool has her listed as a dark horse. The final contestant is Mirai Kisara, a slacker/job hopper who works late at convenience store. A high reward calls for high stakes and it becomes known that once player loses all of her strip cards, she faces a severe punishment. With collars around their necks that all but force the ladies to play along, this game gets stressful in a hurry. Who will be the one to walk away with ten million dollars and the “Strip Mahjong: Battle Royale” crown?

First things first – I liked this movie. It is filled with playful humor and has great pacing. Many of us in the good old U.S. of A. feel that Japanese game shows are crazy and over the top. Part of their appeal is the zany premise for a competition. “Strip Mahjong: Battle Royale” is a genre and fetish filled caricature of this style of entertainment. M.C. Kato is engaged in the visuals, yet totally detached from the emotion that could come with this situation. He is sadistic without being scary. He is animated enough to sell the notion that this is a real game. He uses the game to cater minor fetishes like slow stripping, wet shirts, sock smelling, and panties. He also is the one who dishes out the ‘severe’ punishment. His two sided nature balances the fun tone of “Strip Mahjong” with the serious consequences. Those with visions of ‘Saw’ or ‘Hostel’ can temper their imagination. Things never really get out of hand in this movie.

There is some surprising of tension in the film. For such a micro budget, Director Mark P. Forever really makes the most of Ryosuke Oomine’s goofy script. The punishment phase is more of a reward for viewers, but there is a build-up is created by the players. While knowledge of mahjong may help entertainment value for the feature, it is obvious that there is some skill involved with this game. Hearing the participants internal struggles not only created a layer of tension in the movie, but also develops the characters a bit. It is an impressive one-two punch that balances the quirkiness of the game show.

No complaints in the audio and video portion of Danger After Dark’s DVD. The film is obviously low budget. The 1.78:1 Anamorphic widescreen transfer doesn’t have much to work with. The underground cage match has just enough light to capture the action, but not enough to provide an interesting background. The overall look of the film is rather drab. From a technical standpoint, the quality is decent. There are no obvious glitches with the picture and fleshtones are fine. The Dolby Digital Japanese 2.0 track is good. The film is kind of like a carnival ride, but doesn’t need rear surround to enhance its enjoyment. The track is simple, yet effective.

Easily a title that ranks up with the guiltiest pleasures, “Strip Mahjong: Battle Royale” was a surprising treat. From the corny ‘M.C. Katos Lingerie Time’ to a highly competitive mahjong battle, this quick paced movie has just enough going for it to get viewers to the finish line with a pleasant level of entertainment. Aside from the feature, there aren’t really any extra features. “Strip Mahjong: Battle Royale is a movie that will live and die by its content and fortunately “Strip Mahjong: Battle Royale” is worth the price of admission.
