The Renaissance French composer Clément Janequin is rightfully regarded today as a master of the chanson, of which 286 have survived. Had only the program chansons "La Bataille de Marignan" (which imitates the sounds of battle) and "Le Chant des oiseaux" (which imitates the sound of birds) survived today, he would still lay claim to greatness in the genre.
Unfortunately, Janequin has bequeathed to posterity only two masses, each a "parody" mass derived from a chanson: Messe 'La Bataille' and Messe 'L'Aveugl Dieu'. The most stunning portion of the former mass is the transformation of the martial chanson into the three gentle versions of the Agnus Dei.
The Ensemble Clément Janequin, under the direction of Dominique Visse, performs both of these masses and Janequin's only surviving motet, "Congregati Sunt." While the vocal performances and occasional instrumental accompaniment (provided by Les Sacqueboutiers de Toulouse) are faithful to the period, they are, nonetheless, warm and unfussy.
