Eve Queler has her shortcomings as a conductor. But a conductor's main task is to make a performance happen, to bring all the elements together, and Ms. Queler has been doing this with scrappy determination for 30 years in her role as music director of the Opera Orchestra of New York. Her invaluable mission has been to present concert performances of little-known or problematic operas with the best casts available.
She began her season on Wednesday night at Carnegie Hall, conducting the orchestra, the Ars Musica Chorale and a strong cast in a performance of Donizetti's rarely heard ''La Favorita.'' Ms. Queler first brought this opera to New York in 1975, when her starry cast included Alfredo Kraus, Pablo Elvira, James Morris and, in the title role, Shirley Verrett (who attended Wednesday's performance, looking as radiant as ever).
The story, set in Castile in 1340, though melodramatic, is psychologically subtle. Leonora, the downcast mistress of King Alfonso XI, is touched by the affections of Fernando, a novice who had been a heroic soldier for the king. Fernando wants to leave the monastery and marry Leonora. He does not know that she is the king's favorite, ''La Favorita.''
One reason for the opera's neglect was the confusion over the score. After some pre-production squabbling, the work was given its premiere with an original French libretto at the Paris Opera in 1840. Donizetti had nothing to do with later productions in Italy, where censors ruined the work with cuts and changes. A critical edition by Rebecca Harris-Warrick, based on the original score with the French text carefully translated into Italian, was published in 1999. Ms. Queler conducted from this edition, and ''La Favorita'' emerged as an opulently lyrical and dramatically assured work.–Anthony Tommasini
