'Catholic' is the fourth solo album from Gavin Friday, written and recorded with musician Herbie Macken and released in 2011. It was released in Ireland on Good Friday (22 April), 16 years after the release of his previous album, Shag Tobacco. Catholic deals with concepts of letting go and coming to terms with loss. It was produced by Ken Thomas (Throbbing Gristle, Cocteau Twins, Sigur Rós) and recorded in Dublin, Cork and West Yorkshire.
The year Gavin Friday released his last solo album, Shag Tobacco, Oasis were in their pomp, Adele was seven and Newsweek ran an article stating that the internet would never catch on. Sixteen years on, and just past his 51st birthday, Friday pours his heart out on his fourth solo album, facing both his personal demons (Blame) and mortality (Lord I’m Coming) head on. Weighty stuff, but tungsten- strength tunes, a lush orchestral feel and Friday’s laconic delivery make for a winning combination, Able and Land On The Moon tugging at the heart-strings with the force of Friday’s old musical mucker, Bono.Review by Paul Moody, Q Magazine
We never thought that this would happen.
After all, the final track on "Shag Tobacco", Gavin Friday's most recent studio album (1995), had a self-explanatory title: "The Last Song I'll Ever Sing".
Never say never. Surrounded by a host of new collaborators and sixteen years older, the former Virgin Prunes singer and songwriter unique is back with an album that is one of the sweetest surprises of the year.
It is a thrill that starts with "Able", a song that sounds like Roxy's "More Than This" having a tête-à-tête with Liza Minnelli's version of "Losing My Mind". In a Berlin hotel, with a bottle of Joshua Tree champagne. It is one of two occasions where the record goes uptempo, the other being "Perfume", a slice of repentant trans-disco and the only song in the world to name Italian saint Padre Pio and Asti-born balladeer Paolo Conte in nearly the same line. Briliant is probably a euphemism to describe that.
As for the rest, "Catholic" is a dense flow of avalonesque mid-tempo ballads that never for a moment let the musical / lyrical tension slip. This is a work that faces the shellshock of maturity and middle-age with perverse elegance and soulfully subtle, human poise.
Savour therefore the black honey of "A Song That Hurts", with its cathedrally sparse arrangement, the acoustic silver of "Blame" (in memory of Friday's father) or the naked plea of "It's All In Front Of You"; they are just three examples of the riches in store here, and they all preceed "Lord, I'm Coming", a beatless ambient/ gothic closer that would not sound out of place on Lou Reed's "Berlin" or on that hallowed side two of Bowie's "Low". What have we done to deserve this?
Last but not least: Mr Friday's voice. Time has etched its passing, but it has not managed to weaken it. The low tones are huskier yet no less erotic, while the falsetto paints an even more intoxicating Cappella Sistina of spleen and desire. The angel is still here.
And yes, he is able. Willing and able.
