The versatile Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, whose international profile has been rising in leaps and bounds in the past couple of years, seems to tackle all genres with alacrity, but Baroque period-instrument performance is his main calling card. He's a great choice, then, for the re-launch of Deutsche Grammophon’s Archiv Produktion imprint, with this disc of orchestral music associated with Farinelli’s long tenure at the Spanish court -much of it dug out of archives and recorded for the first time.
It is Farinelli the impresario we meet here, rather than the superstar castrato, but unfortunately for the cogency of this disc, it is the two arias that are included (sung exquisitely by Bejun Mehta) that are its undoubted highlights. One, from a Zarzuela by José de Nebra, is actually a duet, but Mehta sings both parts – if you can stomach the brazen inauthenticity of that approach, you will definitely enjoy Mehta’s lusty swagger. The second is Nicola Porpora’s stunning ‘Alto Giove’ from Polifemo, which is practically worth the entry fee on its own.
