Jazz / Modern Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Piano

I will (maybe) be forgiven for this rough pun, but the circumstances provoked it a bit. I am listening to this record again, almost 40 years after its first publication, at the very moment when China is celebrating with great fanfare the sixtieth anniversary of the birth of its People's Republic. However, its title, "Dazibao" - the wall journals on which the Red Guards wrote their (sic) opinions - and its container (titles and comments by the pianist) fit perfectly into the context of the time which some saw , in the West, to be passionate about, and to support the cultural revolution in progress. Obviously, François Tusques, neither more nor less than many others, was mistaken about what this “revolution” really was and History was going to demonstrate to us, over time, the brutal nature of the regime of whoever joined the table. of the great dictators of the 20th century.

What illusions and disillusions! China then made a clean sweep of its history, its culture, its traditions, and the Tusques record would have joined the general auto-da-fé which caused banned books and “decadent” artistic productions to go up in smoke. advocated by the Party - we must admire the kitsch posters of the time, with the Grand Helmsman enthroned in the midst of peasants and workers, in a pure, falsely realistic firefighter style!

However, the music of Tusques largely contradicts his “blindness” (sorry François, I always liked your music, not missing any of your concerts and musical events at the time, even adding my bass drum to your “Intercommunal” orchestra , one evening when our Beaux-Arts fanfare was participating, if memory serves, in a party organized against the re-urbanization project of the Place des Fêtes, precisely). Why ? Because it is deeply rooted in the great African-American tradition, while projecting itself into the creative reality of the moment, that of free jazz that the confrontations with the Parisian Americans of the time (Sunny Murray, Clifford Thornton, Alan Silva , etc.) enriched substantially.

As early as 1965, with his first record "Free Jazz", François Tusques appeared as one of the pioneers of new European music stemming from jazz. Then he never ceased to enrich his work by meeting with musicians from all walks of life, Americans, Africans, Catalans, Occitans, Bretons, etc., a great multicultural mix - we did not yet use the term crossbreeding in twists and turns as now - which constituted the very active “popular utopian” Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra.

Also, this first solo disc is an important milestone because it is exactly in this bubbling period. The music of Tusques has asserted itself, enriched and radicalized, the achievements are combined with a formal research which places it among the most innovative and free of the moment. The game is controlled, the speech abounding, disheveled but rigorous. "Piano Dazibao" is a record that is inscribed in history, it is also a great political record (in the best sense of the word) because it is a conscious and assumed affirmation of this search for freedom. Quite the opposite of what Mao instituted!
