The Ecology of Stray Dogs: A Study of Free-Ranging Urban Animals
    Publisher: Purdue University Press | ISBN: 1557532451 | 2002 | PDF | 116 pages | 9,89 mb

This study of dog ecology (and behaviour) and of human ecology (and behaviour) discusses the facets of the phenomenon of the urban free-roaming dog. It provides information for students who wish to embark on studies of wild canines. This book was first published in 1973. It is rather brief, but very informative. I can't believe a more recent study has not been undertaken. I think one should be. I would like alot more detail about the lives these poor dogs lead. I read every book associated with Alan Beck, Arnold Arluke, Clinton Sanders, Lockwood, Ascione, and Arkow. The work they do about animals and people is so important! Seek out these authors for more about animals and people.

    The Holocaust Encyclopedia
    Publisher: Yale University Press | ISBN: 0300084323 | edition 2001 | PDF | 807 pages | 10,1 mb

Although most libraries now contain many shelves of books describing various aspects of the Holocaust, comprehensive one-volume histories or reference books on the subject are rare. Thus, The Holocaust Encyclopedia , edited by Walter Lacquer (a modern European historian who has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, and Tel Aviv University, among others), fills an important gap in existing Holocaust literature. His book gathers accessible articles by many of the world's leading Holocaust scholars on the full range of people and places involved, from Adolph Hitler and Gypsies to Russia and the Soviet Union. The articles are complemented by a comprehensive chronology and an excellent bibliographical essay, and by almost 300 illustrations, including maps and photographs. The photographs, by Adam Kaczkowski, are particularly well chosen and designed. Photography's importance in the act of Holocaust remembrance is poignantly understated by Roger Greenspun in his entry on "Cinema and Television," in which he writes, "This was the first great human catastrophe to have so many pictures taken of it." The Holocaust Encyclopedia will become the first stop in the library for high school students wishing to learn about the Holocaust. It will also provide college students and adults with a reliable, authoritative, big-picture perspective on aspects of a genocide that, no matter how fully it is known, will never fully be understood. – Michael Joseph Gross

Aging of the Genome - The Dual Role of DNA in Life and Death - J. Vijg
    Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 019856922X | 2007| PDF | 384 pages | 6,87 mb

Aging has long since been ascribed to the gradual accumulation of DNA mutations in the genome of somatic cells. However, it is only recently that the necessary sophisticated technology has been developed to begin testing this theory and its consequences. Vijg critically reviews the concept of genomic instability as a possible universal cause of aging in the context of a new, holistic understanding of genome functioning in complex organisms resulting from recent advances in functional genomics and systems biology. It provides an up-to-date synthesis of current research, as well as a look ahead to the design of strategies to retard or reverse the deleterious effects of aging. This is particularly important in a time when we are urgently trying to unravel the genetic component of aging-related diseases. Moreover, there is a growing public recognition of the imperative of understanding more about the underlying biology of aging, driven by continuing demographic change.
