Bill Hicks - Shock and Awe

Bill Hicks was the last great social satirist, the true descendent of comedians like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and Mort Sahl. The self-described 'Prince of Darkness,' his work confronted the hypocrisies of late-20th century American life, divining comedy from the more evil impulses of the government and the mass media while assaulting the soulnessness of mainstream culture. An alcoholic, coke addict and chain smoker, Hicks also experimented heavily with hallucinogenic drugs, and his monologues addressed issues of expanded consciousness and spirituality rare to the comedy format; for all of the rage inherent in his stand-up, his message was one of transcendence – as he frequently reminded audiences, 'The truth will set you free.' This release was recorded live on stage in 1992 at Oxford Playhouse Theater, Shock & Awe presents Bill Hicks in full flow with his views on the war and English culture.

Bill Hicks - Life, Love and Laughter

Love Laughter Truth is a compilation of previously unreleased material culled from the multitude of live performance recordings Bill made for his personal use from the mid 80's until his death in 1994. In conjunction with the Hicks Estate, hours of these shows were reviewed, and the bits that were not released on Bill's other albums were edited and compiled to a single incendiary CD.

Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 1

Live in Pittsburgh is the first in a series of previously unreleased complete live performances from the Hicks Estate’s private collection. Recorded in 1991 in front of what Bill dubbed “the worst audience I've ever faced.” – he whips out every trick in his book to win them over. The show is magic.

Bill Hicks - Arizona Bay

Having already recorded two albums live on stage, Hicks developed a more complex plan for ARIZONA BAY. He composed music for the program, painting a sonic portrait of life on the beach after the "big one" dropped California into the Pacific Ocean. He constructed the album with alternating bits of music and comedy, so that while the comedy bits could be taken on their own, the tension the music provided was subversively adding up to a much greater undercurrent of unease. Bill wrote the following note about ARIZONA BAY shortly after finishing its rough edit and mix in the spring of 1993:
"By the way, as far as I know this [mixing-in of music] has never been done before with a comedy album. (I hope there's not a reason for that!) The important thing to remember is that this idea for ARIZONA BAY extends beyond just this album. It is a philosophy about not wanting or having to go through the mainstream to have your work mangled and made mediocre. I believe there is a great deal of anti-LA (and all that LA stands for) out there. I believe people would proudly wear "Arizona Bay" t-shirts and this whole idea could help bring into focus people's antipathy for mainstream America, while also being a concept for those people to rally around."

“Bill Hicks was not your average comedian. Instead of just making jokes, he made jokes with a point to them. Relentless picks at many of the same issues he discussed on Dangerous, except this time, Hicks raises the spiritual and philosophical stakes considerably, as well as introducing his anti-capitalist stance (which he elaborates on more thoroughly on the posthumously released CDs Arizona Bay and Rant in E-Minor). In "What is Pornography?," Hicks uses the Supreme Court definition of pornography ("any act having no artistic merit and causes sexual thoughts") to convince the audience that commercials are pornography, as well as politicians who would rather spend money on the military rather than education. In "Odd Beliefs," Hicks points out that many Christians wear crosses around their necks and asks the audience, "You think when Jesus comes back, he wants to see a f**kin' cross?" Again, Hicks' extreme stances on topics ranging from the war on drugs to the treatment of senior citizens ("A Killer Idea") might offend some listeners, but his act is a comedic catharsis, and he holds none of his feelings back, which more often than not is a good thing.”

Dangerous - Stand-Up Philosophy

Possibly the most confrontational stand-up comic of his era, Bill Hicks perhaps was also the most confessional comic of his time. His rants are more like dissertations with jokes thrown in for good measure. On his first CD release from 1990, Dangerous, Hicks unleashes on the audience his thoughts about homelessness ("Modern Bummer"), smoking ("Smoking"), drugs ("The War on Drugs"), the state of rock & roll ("We Live in a World …"), and the decline of intellectualism ("Flying Saucer Tour") in late-'80s America. He also talks about his relationship with his family ("My Parents") and his fascination with pornography ("Please Do Not Disturb").
