Honegger was keen to reach the widest possible public while retaining his own musical ideas. He had already collaborated with numerous distinguished writers for the theater and had supplied scores for films, such as Abel Gance's Napoléon. All of this experience made readied him for a collaboration with William Aguet when Christoph Colomb was proposed for Radio Lausanne in 1940.

It's been nearly three years since the Canadian Opera Company's gut-wrenchingly satisfying production of Dmitri Shostakovich's 1934 opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Since the work isn't produced often, any opportunity to see it on DVD is worth checking out. This 2008 production from the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence doesn't disappoint…

Recorded in Moscow between 1978 and 1983, the quartets are excellently reproduced in digital sound by Sviatoslav Richter, who maintains just enough shadow from the old Melodiya vinyl's audio vérité to make the music breathe passionately…

Bancquart's gigantic six-part opus resonates with alien textures and aching lines. Suffused with intricately hewn microtonal music, each movement, scored differently, can stand alone as a unique work. This recording captures the integral premiere. Taken sequentially, each tableau seems the most remote outpost, the next unveiling something stranger still. Occasional passages throb with B-movie queasiness, yet the peculiar scales and tones make perfect sense. Bancquart isn't some kid discovering how funky it is to play between the keys: He's a master, effortlessly devising unbelievable sonorities…

Some DVDs are self-recommending; i.e., they offer definitive performances by great artists. That’s the case in this 1992 BBC-derived production of Tatiana Nikolayeva playing Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, a work she inspired and which the composer dedicated to her. They met in 1950; Nikolayeva a contestant in a Bach Piano competition, Shostakovich on the jury. Her playing of Bach’s music decided the composer to write his own set of Preludes and Fugues, after the master’s great work. She was only 26 at the time and in 1992, we see a grandmotherly figure, pudgy, hair in a bun, but also a musician/pianist of the highest order playing a work she knew intimately and recorded often. Furthermore, it’s a work that arguably is the greatest solo piano work of the 20th century, a work in which Shostakovich laid bare his soul, writing some of his most intimate and moving music…

Elie Siegmeister (b. January 15, 1909, New York City – March 10, 1991, Manhasset, New York) was an American composer, educator and author. His varied musical output showed his concern with the development of an authentic American musical vocabulary. Jazz, blues and folk melodies and rhythms are frequent themes in his many song cycles, his nine operas, his eight symphonies, and his many choral, chamber, and solo works. His 37 orchestral works have been performed by leading orchestras throughout the world under such conductors as Arturo Toscanini, Leopold Stokowski, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Lorin Maazel, and Sergiu Comissiona. He also composed for Hollywood (notably, the film score of They Came to Cordura, starring Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth, 1959) and Broadway ("Sing Out, Sweet Land," 1944, book by Walter Kerr).
