FLAC (tracks), Lossless | 51:53 | 180 Mb
Genre: Classical / Label: Antarctica Records

Sofie set out to find pieces from the solo lute repertoire that she intuitively associated with the different phases of the text. The result is a concert with a surprising palette of colors, styles and atmospheres. At times she chose the rich, powerful sound of the theorbo. At other times, she chose the fragile, muted sound of the Renaissance lute
The Prélude by French Baroque composer Robert de Visée combines phrases full of grandeur with pauses for breath full of intimate doubt. The music of John Dowland draws on the typically English predilection for melancholy. Francesco da Milano's fantasies and ricercars echo not only the bright colors of the Italian Renaissance, but also the constant search for a new beginning. Luis de Narvaez's Cancion del emperador is an arrangement for lute of Josquin Desprez's famous chanson Mille Regretz, a song that exudes serene regret for all that is not. And in the Chaconne by Robert de Visée, the same chord progression spins on its own axis. At Sofie's request, Vladimir Gorlinsky created a new composition that reflects the state of mind in the midst of a burnout

The fact that Philip Glass' music stands up so well in a variety of arrangements is a testament to its durability. German composer and pianist/organist Steffen Schleiermacher offers a recital of two dances from Dance, Glass' monumental 1979 multimedia collaboration with choreographer Lucinda Childs and visual artist Sol Lewitt, arranged for organ, and Sonata, a transcription for piano of one section from each of Glass' three portrait operas, made by Paul Barnes. The dances, which frame the Sonata on the CD, are especially effective when performed on the organ, due to the grandeur of which the organ is capable, its ability to sustain notes without decay, and the fact that its sound is closely related to the electronic keyboards used in the original. There is more of a sonic leap from the wind and electronic sounds of Einstein on the Beach and the orchestras of Satyagraha and Akhnaten to a solo piano.

Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss were united by their deep relationship to literature and especially to poetry as a source of inspiration for its musical interpretation and transcendence into a sphere of expression that reflected their own feelings about life. Nevertheless, both composers worked on their texts in very different ways. While Mahler adjusted the texts through a multitude of interventions - omissions, rearrangements, and even his own additions - according to need and expressive demand, Strauss stuck strictly to the poems.

APR’s original 1997 transfers of the Impromptus had the benefit of being taken from vinyl pressings of the 78rpm masters and this reissue has allowed us to improve them even further, presenting these gems in the best possible sound.

Scriabin and Mozart: two composers rarely associated, yet the juxtaposition here seems clear when performed by Zlata Chochieva. In this first naive classique lbum, the Russian pianist is ingenious in both the cycles of fragmented variations and the more opulent sonatas or preludes. This project is inspired by the 150th anniversary of Scriabin’s birth, but Zlata Chochieva has been a fan of the Russian composer since her childhood as he was the first to appeal to her emotions as a listener and performer.Associating him with the classical Mozart - rather than a romantic composer, as is usually the case - enables Zlata Chochieva to conjure up an unexpected kinship that benefits from her vibrant and graceful style, rising to thrilling virtuosity. “The perfection in the phrasing, the polyphony and the formal proportions, plus the concision and the lack of superfluous notes are just some of the points that link Scriabin to Mozart", she explains.

Eric Tanguy’s focus on “imagination, poetry and an interior world” has helped to make him one of the most widely performed French composers of today. Belonging in a line that leads back from his mentor Henri Dutilleux to Messiaen and Debussy, he does not identify with any specific ‘school’ of composition. His aesthetic has also been shaped by the music of Sibelius and his technique is characterised by intricate use of modes. “There is rigour and purpose behind my music,” he says, but I don’t expect the listener to have to decode it … It’s the feeling that matters.” The album In a Dream takes its title from a piece for violin and piano, one of the eight chamber works on its programme. Composed between 1999 and 2019, they are performed here by violinists Alexandra Conunova and Rosanne Philippens, viola-player Lise Berthaud, cellist Edgar Moreau, clarinettist Pierre Génisson, pianists Suzana Bartal and David Kadouch, and string ensemble Quatuor Diotima.

In 1996, the young violinist Jorge Jiménez heard Bach's Goldberg Variations for the first time in Glen Gould's famous version on a simple cassette recorder. Since then, this wonderful composition has not let him go. At first he resigned himself to the fact that as a violinist he would never be able to play this work. But over time he realised that several voices can sound at the same time on the violin, as Johann Sebastian Bach exemplifies in his six famous partitas and sonatas for solo violin. Finally, he set to work and began to transcribe one of the most complicated piano pieces of the Baroque into a piece for solo violin.

On March 16, 1968, the United States Army killed over 500 unarmed civilians in the hamlet of Mỹ Lai, Vietnam. The unimaginable brutality of the event impacted all those who witnessed it firsthand, including helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, who, against orders, intervened to save Vietnamese lives. Thompson’s story is the basis of the opera Mỹ Lai, composed by Jonathan Berger (music) and Harriet Scott Chessman (libretto) for Kronos Quartet, Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ, and vocalist Rinde Eckert. This recording of Mỹ Lai captures the visceral, phantasmal depictions of Thompson’s grief, horror, and guilt as he is haunted by persistent memories of that cataclysmic day, half a world and nearly four decades away. Tense and unforgiving, Mỹ Lai is “a gripping affair, beginning to end” (New York Times). Presented here alongside recollections by Vietnamese survivor Trần Văn Đức, it is a memorial to all the Mỹ Lai villagers killed on that grim day.

As a more consistently light-hearted version, with delightful La Scala sets and colourful costumes, the 1994 TDK Don Pasquale will also be hard to beat. Visually it is a joy, and with three outstanding principals the performance sparkles from start to finish. By not seeming too old, Ferruccio Furlanetto’s portrayal of Don Pasquale is the more convincing, but he has no chance against Nuccia Focille’s minx of a Norina and one certainly feels sorry for him at his discomfiture. Gregory Kunde is an appropriately ardent Ernesto; his voice isn’t creamy but the sings passionately and has good comic timing, and Lucio Gallo enters into the spirit of the story as a wily Dottore Malatesta.

Linn welcomes back lute virtuoso William Carter in a programme of works by another virtuoso, Esaias Reusner (1636-79), who worked and performed across Europe. Born in Silesia, he was considered to be one of the best lute players of his time and his influence was extensive. "Some may be drawn to the brilliance and noise of thunder and lightning, but ever since my youth, the soft and sweet sonorities of noble music has been my only pleasure", so writes Reusner in the preface of his major work, Delitiae testudinis. This collection, introspective in essence, is outstanding not just for its exceptional quality but because it contains the very first dance suites - for any instrument! - published in Europe. This sequence of dances (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue) was a form used by virtually every Baroque composer who followed, including Bach and Haendel. Carter has recorded three of these suites and also pieces from later publications, some of which are premiere recordings.
