Cecilia Bartoli's new CD features a collection of music that could not be heard in her native Rome at the start of the 18th century due to Papal censorship. Theaters, the Church felt, were places of evil and corruption and operas led people to immorality. But some music-loving senior members of the priesthood asked composers to write oratorios and cantatas–indeed, operas without staging, essentially–for their own private entertainment. Call it what you will, the music is sensational–by turns virtuosic, gentle, and playful–and always expressive: just right, it seems, for Cecilia Bartoli's temperament. The opening aria on the CD, a call for peace in the name of Jesus, is, in fact, a dazzling martial air with trumpets blaring and the voice going through an amazing array of coloratura fireworks.

I always found that the music of Impressionism and Late Romanticism was an object of longing for me as a bassoonist; Saint-Saëns was one of the few composers of his time who helped to expand the repertoire of “one of these otherwise so neglected instruments”.

The goal of the HUMAN Culture Project is to encourage younger people and adults to strive for a society based on freedom, tolerance and peace. Treaties and economic agreements are not enough if the European idea of peace is to remain a sustainable one in future. One thing that’s long been apparent is that it’s people who have to make this vision come alive. Devising common guidelines on how to serve and engage with society is vital, particularly in view of the disquiet in today’s multicultural societies. Therefore, HUMAN’s objective, founded on the UN’s declaration of human rights, is to motivate young people to boost the European tenet of peace through music, dance and interaction with others.

The bassoon was only able to establish itself as a solo instrument towards the end of the 17th century. The first virtuosos came from France, where the bassoon was used as a bass instrument in military orchestras and the outstanding bassoonists were also able to establish themselves in concert. The American bassoonist Danny Bond, who is active in many of Europe's leading early music ensembles, dedicated three albums, released on the Accent label between 1983 and 2000, to the French repertoire for solo bassoon. The first album highlights the French Baroque with works by Michel Corrette and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, the other two albums present works by François Devienne and Etienne Ozi, who stand on the threshold from the Baroque to the Classical period.

William Bland’s cycle of 24 piano sonatas, one in each of the major and minor keys, was composed between the years 1998 and 2014. The cycle is the West Virginia-born composer’s magnum opus, and is a summation of an extraordinarily wide range of cultural influences. The musical content of the sonatas merges strains of the simple and complex, popular and classical, romantic and modernist. American pianist Kevin Gorman, in his debut recording writes: “the essence of these sonatas is passion, which beckons me as a pianist to recipro- cate the intensity with which these originally had been composed.”

The two pianists featured here were contemporaries, both English. Both made a small number of recordings for Columbia between 1926 and 1930 and today are largely forgotten. Howard\-Jones was of an academic nature whose interpretations were described as having scholarly and fastidious profundity. He excelled in Bach and Brahms and his Well\-Tempered Clavier recordings in particular offer playing of rare spirituality and beauty. As a friend of the composer and dedicatee of five of the piano pieces, his Delius recordings, which comprise the complete meagre published output for solo piano by the composer, have a unique authority. Edward Isaacs, who revelled in the repertoire of Chopin and Liszt, was described as a kindly genial companion and a witty charming raconteur. His recordings radiate brilliance and joie de vivre. This is the first time most of these discs have been reissued since the days of the original 78s. An added bonus is the discovery of a wonderful previously unpublished Howard\-Jones recording of Beethovens Rondo in G major.

Swiss violinist Sebastian Bohren, who’s star is rapidly in the ascendant, makes his AVIE label debut with two concertos from Mozart’s “year of the violin” – No. 3 and No. 5 – paired with the composer’s youthful Symphony No. 29. Sebastian’s interpretations bring out the sparkling energy of the concertos, written when Mozart was just 19 years old, yet at the same time a brandish a smoothly burnished sense of style. His partners on the album, famed Hungarian violinist-turned conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy and Sebastian’s compatriots the CHAARTS Chamber Artists – comprised of leading European soloists and chamber musicians – perfectly embody these contrasting characteristics, both in their accompaniments and their reading of the Symphony which was written within a year of the concerti.Sebastian is equally at home as a soloist and chamber musician. He plays the “Ex-Wanamaker-Hart” violin made by Guadagnini in Parma in 1761.

This dazzling kaleidoscope of moods is embedded with works by Chopin and Tchaikovsky, of particularly passionate resonance. Great musical moments that confirm Severin von Eckardstein’s status as one of the most poetic musicians in the world of the piano.

Lebanese-born, Canadian-Armenian-American soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian is as celebrated for her beauty, dynamic presence, and style as for her strikingly multidimensional voice. With this deeply personal project, she gathers a selection of haunting and poignant lullabies that draw on the memories and experiences of the Armenian people. Twenty-nine tracks trace an arc from the Ottoman Empire through the Genocide and beyond, with songs and transcriptions by the country’s beloved folk composer Gomidas Vartabed, Parsegh Ganatchian who joined the diaspora in Lebanon, and Ganatchian’s contemporary Mihran Toumajan. For Isabel, these evocative songs span two centuries and five generations. Sung by her great-grandmother, grandmother and mother, and now to her own children, Isabel’s "Armenian Songs" have an appeal to children of all ages.

Simon Boccanegra is set in 14th-century Genoa where Simon, formerly a dashing corsair, has become Doge. Though reunited with his long-lost daughter, the city becomes immersed in turmoil in a story rich in vengeance and the redemptive power of love. Verdi wrote the opera in 1857 but revised it in 1881 in association with Arrigo Boito, with whom he was to work on Otello. Verdi’s inclusion of a new scene set in the Great Council Chamber, was part of an approach that defines a completely new musical perspective, coherent with the language of the 1880s, and which ensured the opera’s belated triumph.

No composer looms over modern jazz quite like Johann Sebastian Bach, whose harmonic rigour seems to have provided the basis for bebop and all that followed. Listen to the endlessly mutating semiquavers tumbling from Charlie Parker’s saxophone and it could be the top line of a Bach fantasia; the jolting cycle of chords in John Coltrane’s Giant Steps could come straight from a Bach fugue and Bach’s contrapuntal techniques crop up in countless jazz pianists, from Bill Evans to Nina Simone. Bach certainly casts a long shadow over US pianist Brad Mehldau: even when he’s gently mutilating pieces by Radiohead, Nick Drake or the Beatles, he sounds like Glenn Gould ripping into the Goldberg Variations. Which is why it comes as no surprise to see Mehldau recording an entire album inspired by Bach. However, this is not a jazz album. Instead of riffing on Bach themes, as the likes of Jacques Loussier or the Modern Jazz Quartet have done in the past, After Bach sees Mehldau using Bach’s methodology. Mehldau plays five of Bach’s canonic 48 Preludes and Fugues, each followed by his own modern 21st-century response.
