It is a well-known fact that Robert Schumann (1810-1856) entertained the idea of becoming a professional author for many of his youthful years, before eventually deciding to focus on music. This choice, however, did not withdraw him from the realm of words, which continued to attract him during his entire life: he was an avid reader, a prolific writer and a creator full of imagination and of narrative ingenuity.

Today, there is no doubt that Johann Sebastian Bach took Baroque music to its sublime zenith. Just how much Bach was ahead of his time can be gauged by the fact his ‘piano’ music engaged the greatest among his successors: Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy and Shostakovich. Four pianists perform Bach on this album. They stand for different periods in interpretational history, beginning with the ‘New Objectivity’ of Carl Seeman, born in 1910, up to the highly virtuoso art of Konstantin Lifschitz, born in 1976 and also taught by Alfred Brendel. The four personalities on this album merge with Bach’s own music, giving some notion of why it is accorded universal magnitude.

Andres Mustonen, artistic director of Hortus Musicus, writes of the groups new release: The present release, titled Canto, is not trying to be an anthological overview of Italian music from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is rather a walk through the streets of Italian cities of the time, sometimes passing by a church, sometimes slipping into taverns or listening to sounds coming from the open windows of the doges palazzoThis album lacks the puritanical-musicological ambition to remove a layer of dust from the yellowed manuscripts lying on archive shelves. The uninhibited performance of Hortus Musicus that is life, our life itself.

Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974) holds a special place in Danish music, enriching it with an extra dimension of spirituality and pithiness. Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and conductor Andreas Delfs here present two key works in Riisagers catalogue, one of which clearly represented a turning point in his output, namely his orchestral reworking of a selection of Carl Czernys piano etudes for his and Harald Landers ballet Etudes. The other heralded a stylistic change and ranks as a highly personal contribution to the concerto genre Riisagers Violin Concerto is played here by Danish violinist Ian van Rensburg. Van Rensburg has been first concert master of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra since 1993. He also enjoys a versatile international career as an active soloist, chamber musician, and teacher.

After 1933 nobody had the opportunity to hear this opera. Then the Osnabrück Music Theater rediscovered Das Lied der Nacht by Hans Gál and performed it in 2017. This late-romantic opera to a text by Karl Michael von Levetzow premiered in 1926, but since its composer was of Jewish origin, the Nazis prohibited stage productions of it. During his later years Hans Gál was doubly forgotten: as one of the many Jewish artists who were forced into exile by the Fascists and as a conservative "very-latest romanticist" pursuing paths laid out by Brahms and Richard Strauss.
