There is no shortage of discs around featuring transcriptions of Renaissance music for brass. Whilst played on modern instruments the main difference here however is that London Brass, several of whom play period instruments in other ensembles, have enlisted the specialist knowledge of Philip Pickett to direct them.

The 200th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko in 2019 promped many musicians and concert and festival organisers to promote, in particular, the forgotten works of the Polish Romantic. Performed for the first time on 12 December 1869, the opera The Pariah met with severe criticism during the composer's lifetime. Almost 50 years later, during Warsaw's reopening, The Pariah also did not get much sympathy from the audience and reviewers. This album, including a concert recording made during this year's Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival, is a great opportunity to get acquainted with this little-known work.

Beethoven reputedly wasn't Beecham's favorite composer, but you wouldn't know it from this performance; it's exceedingly well conceived, highly energetic, and has that unique Beecham sparkle to it. The fillers also are delightful. All recorded in Ascona, Switzerland in 1957.

Inspiring choral music: the Hallelujah chorus is one of the greatest choral hits of all time, and Handel’s Messiah in its entirety is one of the most popular oratorios ever. The large-scale work, which Handel composed in 1742 over the course of a mere 24 days, was given its highly acclaimed premiere in Dublin and was, during the composer’s lifetime, his most often performed oratorio. Although Messiah has no actual dramatic plot, simply reflecting on the character of the Messiah, Handel pulled out all the stops by integrating many compositional elements from his experience in writing opera. He created a work that still has the power to deeply move its audience every time, with its brilliant choruses and poignant arias.

Stiffelio was based on the play Le pasteur, ou L'évangile et le foyer by Émile Souvestre and Eugène Bourgeois and was originally censored due to it involving as it does a Protestant minister of the church with an adulterous wife.
The golden timbre of Roberto Aronica graces the title role…His commanding tenor makes one sit up and listen, with some notable long-breathed phrasing and a smooth legato a joy to hear…[Yu Guanqun's] is a rich, true lyric soprano with a glint of steel and strong, even emission in the upper register…[Frontali] sings with great command of Verdian shape and line. The doyen of British organists, Francis Jackson celebrated his 100th birthday in 2017. He has remained active as a composer, and his music is widely performed. In this recording, made during that centenary year and now released by Willowhayne Records, Mark Swinton pays tribute to this remarkable musician with a survey of his organ music, encompassing works written throughout his 100-plus years. From the heartfelt Impromptu of 1944, a birthday gift to his teacher and mentor Sir Edward Bairstow, to his Fifth and Sixth Organ Sonatas composed during the first decade of the present century, Jackson's flair at writing for his own instrument is abundantly displayed. In the clean acoustics of the Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick, the 1980 Nicholson organ offers a blend of Classical and Romantic aesthetics that perfectly amplify the counterpoint, texture and colours of this richly rewarding music.

The Historical Orchestra , a team directed by Martyna Pastusza specializing in historical performance, invites you to the world of French baroque music. In this era, political and artistic life on the Seine was focused on the stunningly lavish Versailles court of Louis XIV. The Sun King gathered around himself a great array of musicians who were extremely important to him- he danced in ballet shows himself- and the performances were not only a popular entertainment, but also a dramatized allegory of government. Of the composers presented on the album, only Michele Corrette was not associated with the royal court. Apart from him, the recording includes compositions of such celebrities as Jean Baptiste Lully, violin virtuoso and dancer, unparalleled gambist Marain Marais and famous organist François Couperin.

Born in Majorca c. 1232, three years after the Christian conquest of the island (1229), Ramon Llull had very close contact with Muslim culture. It was not until after he was thirty years old that he gave up his life at court and began to study theology and philosophy. Not long after that, he purchased a Moorish slave in order to learn Arabic. This proximity to the Muslim world gave him an exceptional insight into religion and culture which set him apart from all the intellectuals in the Europe of his day. A tireless traveller, he visited the principal courts of Christendom to rally support for his projects, and he did so while engaging in an intense missionary activity to convert Jewish and, above all, Muslim unbelievers.

This cycle of preludes and fugues composed by Johann Sebastian Bach ranks tremendously high in the world of music. It is not just one of the immortal masterpieces of the world music literature; it is an encyclopedia of polyphonic art, a handbook for life, and an inexhaustible source of delight. Sviatoslav Richter said, Whenever I set to the Well-Tempered Clavier, I always get consumed with a desire not to exclude any of the sides for the sake of one narrow and dogmatic position. I am confident that Bach can be played in different ways, with different articulation and different dynamics, as long as the whole is preserved and the performance is convincing.

Philip Glass’ Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra, composed in 2000 and transcribed for wind ensemble by Mark Lortz in 2004, is a significant addition to the repertoire of large-scale works for timpani. The work is rhythmically galvanizing, sonically alluring, and features virtuoso cadenzas for both soloists. Symphony No 4 ‘In the Shadow of No Towers’ is Mohammed Fairouz’s first major work for wind ensemble, and its inspiration is the provocative comic book by Art Spiegelman, written shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Spiegelman himself has commented: “I’m moved by [this] scary, somber, and seriously silly symphony…I’m honored that the composer found an echo in my work that allowed him to strike a responsive chord and express his own complex responses to post 9/11 America. He emerges from the rubble with a very tony piece of high-brow cartoon music.”

Hailed by some as the third primary figure among great Russian pianists of the twentieth century's second half, Lazar Berman has occasionally lived up to that reputation, but frequently has not. Emil Gilels, the first genius-level Soviet pianist to become well-known in the West, insisted that there was one artist, yet unheard in the West, who was the greater artist. Later, after Sviatoslav Richter's arrival in Europe and America, most felt Gilels had been correct. Still later, however, Gilels maintained that yet another pianist, Lazar Berman, was the finest of the three. After the initial stir created by Berman's 1976 American tour and other appearances in the West, critical opinion held that, while he was an extraordinary if uneven artist, he was not superior to the protean Richter or to the clear-minded Gilels. Still, his art was of an order by no means common.
