Foundations of Dependable Computing: Models and Frameworks for Dependable Systems

Gary M. Koob, Clifford G. Lau, «Foundations of Dependable Computing: Models and Frameworks for Dependable Systems»
    Springer | ISBN: 0792394844 | 1994 | PDF | 284 pages | 10.9 MB

Foundations of Dependable Computing: Models and Frameworks for Dependable Systems presents two comprehensive frameworks for reasoning about system dependability, thereby establishing a context for understanding the roles played by specific approaches presented in this book's two companion volumes. It then explores the range of models and analysis methods necessary to design, validate and analyze dependable systems. A companion to this book (published by Kluwer), subtitled Paradigms for Dependable Applications, presents a variety of specific approaches to achieving dependability at the application level. Driven by the higher level fault models of Models and Frameworks for Dependable Systems, and built on the lower level abstractions implemented in a third companion book subtitled System Implementation, these approaches demonstrate how dependability may be tuned to the requirements of an application, the fault environment, and the characteristics of the target platform. Three classes of paradigms are considered: protocol-based paradigms for distributed applications, algorithm-based paradigms for parallel applications, and approaches to exploiting application semantics in embedded real-time control systems. Another companion book (published by Kluwer) subtitled System Implementation, explores the system infrastructure needed to support the various paradigms of Paradigms for Dependable Applications. Approaches to implementing support mechanisms and to incorporating additional appropriate levels of fault detection and fault tolerance at the processor, network, and operating system level are presented. A primary concern at these levels is balancing cost and performance against coverage and overall dependability. As these chapters demonstrate, low overhead, practical solutions are attainable and not necessarily incompatible with performance considerations. The section on innovative compiler support, in particular, demonstrates how the benefits of application specificity may be obtained while reducing hardware cost and run-time overhead.

Koichi Kurumatani, «Multi-Agent for Mass User Support»
    Springer | ISBN: 3540219404 | 2004 | PDF | 217 pages | 8.82 MB

This book originates from the IJCAI 2003 International Workshop on Multi-Agents for Mass User Support, MAMUS 2003, held in Acapulco, Mexico in August 2003. Besides revised selected workshop papers, the volume editors invited contributions by leading researchers in order to complete coverage of important aspects. The papers address major current issues of multi-agent technology and its applications to support mass users and society more generally by using social coordination mechanisms. The papers are organized into topical sections on the theoretical background, resource allocation algorithms, mass user support in traffic systems, game theoretic analysis, and architectures for social coordination mechanisms.

Amit Basu, Robert W. Blanning, «Metagraphs and Their Applications»
    Springer | ISBN: 0387372334 | 2006 | PDF | 172 pages | 3 MB

An important concept in the design of many information processing systems – such as transaction processing systems, decision support systems, and workflow systems – is that of a graph. In its simplest form a graph consists of a set of points (or nodes) and a set of ordered or unordered pairs of nodes (or edges). If the pairs of nodes are unordered, the graph is called a simple graph, and if they are ordered, the graph is called a directed graph, or digraph. In both cases, the graph represents a network through which materials, people, information, etc. can flow. The difference is whether the flow is restricted to one direction or whether there is no such restriction.

Rene Vidal, Anders Heyden, «Dynamical Vision»
    Springer | ISBN: 3540709312 | 2007 | PDF | 329 pages | 16.61 MB

This book reports 24 contributions presented at the First and Second International Workshops on Dynamical Vision, WDV 2005 and WDV 2006, which were held in conjunction with the 10th International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV 2005) and the 9th European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV 2006), respectively. These contributions were selected from over 52 submissions through a rigorous double-blind review process by members of the Program Committee. The book is structured in six parts, each containing three to five contributions on six topics of dynamical vision: (1) motion segmentation and estimation, (2) human motion analysis, tracking and recognition, (3) dynamic textures, (4) motion tracking, (5) rigid and non-rigid motion analysis, and (6) motion filtering and vision-based control. The success of these workshops would not have been possible without the outstanding quality of reviews by members of the Program Committee, the financial support provided by several sponsors, and the technical support provided by Avinash Ravichandran of The Johns Hopkins University.

Beginning Access 2002 VBA (Programmer to Programmer)
    Publisher: Wrox | ISBN: 0764544020 | edition 2003 | CHM | 945 pages | 25,3 mb

Access 2002 is the core database application within the Office XP suite. This book focuses on the programming language that underlies Access 2002 (and all the other office products) – VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). While you can achieve a great deal in Access without ever knowing anything about programming, sooner or later you will want to develop applications with greater scope and flexibility, and a professional feel and functionality - this is where VBA comes into its own. Using VBA with Access is an incredibly powerful technique as, amongst other things, it allows you to create custom user interfaces, to automate complex tasks, to integrate Access with other parts of the Office suite, and to provide enhanced security for your database. VBA has a very simple syntax which makes it an ideal starting place for novice programmers and a perfect lead in to Microsoft's popular programming language, Visual Basic. This book covers everything you need to gain the confidence and knowledge to go away and begin to write your own programs. All the concepts are illustrated with plenty of interesting and practical examples and exercises. This book is a revision of the best-selling Beginning Access 97 and Beginning Access 2000 VBA books, reworked to provide a rich tutorial to programming Access 2002 with VBA. New material covers the enhanced XML, integrating with SQL Server Desktop Engine, and so on.
