Raman Amplifiers for Telecommunications: Physical Principles

    Springer-Verlag| ISBN 0387007512 | 327 Pages | 6 Mb

There has been a revived interest in Raman amplification due to the availability of high pump powers and improvements in small core size fibers. Two general categories of Raman amplifiers exist: distributed and discrete, also known as DRAs. They improve the noise figure and reduce the nonlinear penalty of the amplifier, allowing for longer amplifiers spans, higher bit rates, closer channel spacings, and operation near the zero dispersion wavelength. DRAs are already becoming commonplace in most long-haul networks. Consequently, Raman amplifiers should see a wide range of deployment in the next few years.

    Optimization Methods in Electromagnetic Radiation

    Series: Springer Monographs in Mathematics
Angell, Thomas S., Kirsch, Andreas | ISBN 0-387-20450-4

This book considers problems of optimization arising in the design of electromagnetic radiators and receivers. The authors develop a systematic general theory that can be applied to a wide class of structures. The theory is illustrated with familiar, simple examples and indications of how the results can be applied to more complicated structures. The final chapter introduces techniques from multicriteria optimization in antenna design. The material is intended for a dual audience of mathematicians and mathematically-sophisticated engineers. References to both the mathematics and engineering literature help guide the reader through the necessary mathematical background.

Written for: Researchers and graduate students in Applied Mathematics and Electrical Engineering.

Handbook of Modern Sensors : Physics, Designs, and Applications

    Fraden, Jacob|ISBN: 0-387-00750-4

The Handbook's coverage of sensors is extensive, ranging from simple photodiodes to complex devices containing components in combination. It offers hard-to-find reference data on the properties of numerous materials and sensing elements and emphasizes devices that are less well-known, whose technology is still being refined, and whose use permits the measurement of variables that were previously inaccessible.
