I started teaching myself japanese a few years ago and with the exception of Rosseta Stone, have tried pretty much all the CD sets out there. (My local library has a huge selection.)
This is by far the best I've found. All the others pretty much just teach you phrases, without sufficiently explaining how they are constructed… hence you don't understand how the language works and can't build upon it with new vocabulary. This is fine for a beginner, but eventually you hit a dead end.
This CD set is:
1. Brilliantly organized. It teaches you all the grammar in an engaging way.
2. Uses natural phrases as teaching tools as opposed to stuffy business-speak, which is very common in other "learn japanese" CDs.
3. and… I love the sound of the teacher's voice!
I would definitely recommend buying this CD or renting it from a library if you have a year or two of Japanese under your belt. Otherwise, start with the beginner set.
