In the 1890's, Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of "Treasure Island" and "Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde", chartered a yacht and traveled across the Pacific, visiting the Marquesas, the Paumotus, and the Gilberts. "In the South Seas" is Stevenson's account of his travels and of the island cultures he lived in, some of which still practised ritual cannibalism. Shortly after this book was published, Stevenson settled permanently on the Samoan Islands, where he was known as "Tusitala, "the storyteller". He died in Samoa in 1874. New Introduction gives biographical sketch.
