The Herland Trilogy is composed of three landmark feminist texts, published in the 1910s, that explore two examples of feminist utopia and prescribe how the world could achieve such a utopia in only a few decades. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s utopias, children are cherished and are carefully cared for and taught; food is plentiful, delicious, and affordable; women are free, equal, and productive members of society; everyone works but no one works to exhaustion; and communities are close knit and actively engaged with each other. Such a utopia may sound light-years away, even now, but Perkins Gilman believed it could be achieved in the very short-term if the people decided to achieve it. The primary topic of the trilogy may be feminist utopia, but the overarching theme radiating through the work is hope; hope for a better future, hope for a world in which everyone wakes up and decides to be better. This unabridged edition of The Herland Trilogy has carefully restored the tales to their originally published forms, allowing the reader to experience the works as Perkins Gilman intended. Issues with typos and missing text in some other editions of this book were likely created in the process of copying or digitizing them and are not present in this edition. A biography of the author and a new forward have also been added.
