This book does not claim to be a systematic account of contemporary image technologies and of the new visual culture. Its chapters should be read as essays, intended to move against the grain of the dominant technoculture agenda, and to open up other ways of looking at culture and politics in the field of vision. In many cases, they have been written in reaction to events in the world which have brought home to us the power of the image in contemporary culture. And, of course, in all cases, they embody my own particular vision, with all its blindnesses and also, I hope, some insights.
