Stem cell science has, within a short space of years, given rise to a wide range of organizations dedicated to this field. Some are research bodies attached to academic institutions; others are start-up companies formed specifically to develop and exploit the products developed in research organizations.
Most commercial companies in the stem cell arena are focused on developments based on autologous or allogeneic transplantation of adult (i.e. non-embryo) stem cells. A few companies concentrate on embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and their prospects are, clearly, brighter now that US federal research funding has been cleared for this type of development.
