    Das beliebte Lehrbuch in seiner 3. Auflage ist eine leicht verständliche Einführung in die allgemeine Relativitätstheorie. Der Autor verzichtet dabei bewusst auf die umfassende Darstellung der komplexen Mathematik und insbesondere der Tensorrechnung, wie sie in vielen Fachbüchern über die allgemeine Relativitätstheorie zu finden ist.

    Das Werk ist stattdessen so aufgebaut, dass nach einer Einführung in die physikalischen Grundlagen der Gravitation die notwendigen mathematischen Begriffe wie Krümmung und Metrik zunächst mit Hilfe anschaulicher Geometrie erläutert werden. Mittels elementarer Mathematik werden dann die Grundgleichungen der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, insbesondere die Einstein'sche Feldgleichung abgeleitet. Von diesen Gleichungen ausgehend werden Beispiele u.a. aus der Astronomie und der Kosmologie vorgestellt und auch in das Thema Gravitationswellen eingeführt.
