Description
Unit 2 of our AP Biology course takes us into the fascinating world of the cell—the fundamental unit of life. Every organism, from the simplest bacterium to the most complex multicellular organism, depends on the structure and function of its cells. In this unit, we will explore the shared features that unite all cells, as well as the differences that distinguish prokaryotic and eukaryotic forms of life.We will begin by examining cellular structures and organelles, connecting their unique roles to the processes that sustain life. You will learn how compartmentalization increases efficiency, how membranes regulate the flow of materials and information, and how organelles like mitochondria and chloroplasts serve as powerhouses of energy conversion. Equally important, we will study how cells interact with their environment through transport mechanisms, communication systems, and signal pathways that allow for coordination within and between cells. This unit emphasizes not only the details of cellular anatomy but also the overarching principle that structure supports function. By the end, you will have a strong grasp of how cells serve as dynamic, interconnected systems—an understanding that is foundational for all subsequent units in AP Biology. Understanding the material of this unit will help you immensely in the future units as well as the overall exam preparation.
