As a portrait, it comes warts and all and would doubtless have been to Cromwell's liking. The twelve papers in the volume vary greatly in terms of the quality of sociological thought and the elegance of their style. The strongest contributions are the outcome of investigative empirical research. Where attempts are made to provide a theoretical framework for the empirical work, assumptions tend to remain unstated.
