    Christopher Bollas ci presenta una serie di conferenze su Donald Winnicott da lui tenute, negli anni Ottanta del Novecento, all'Istituto di Neuropsichiatria infantile dell'Università di Roma. Bollas indaga le posizioni assunte da Winnicott e le traduce in formulazioni cliniche come l'"oggetto trasformativo" e il "conosciuto non pensato", analizzando ogni fase dello sviluppo del bambino, dalla condizione intrinseca di solitudine del feto fino al concepimento della morale, ai progressi nel gioco e alla creatività. Ma è sull'importanza della fase prenatale che batte l'accento, su questa "solitudine essenziale" i cui vissuti riverberano su tutti i passaggi della vita, determinando "in che misura l'infante sceglierà di spingersi nel mondo alla ricerca di esperienze": ciascun feto giunge al momento del parto con capacità diverse di affrontare quello che Winnicott definisce "il grande cambiamento" dal non essere nati al venire al mondo e lo sviluppo successivo.
